Could teams be a little more original with their jerseys?

I'm watching the OKC Barons vs the Wolves, and I can't help but notice how OKC has taken on the Edmonton jerseys. Why can't more minor league teams come up with their own color scheme? I hate when teams just use the parent jerseys and slap a different logo on the front.

I don't mind when they take a color scheme and slap their own logo on it, as long as the logo isn't crap, otherwise you end up with jerseys like OKC, Quad Cities, Lowell/Albany, etc.

I agree. Hate it. Syracuse for example. Switch affiliations to Anaheim, now they have orange and gold all over the place. So much for identity.

makes sense to me, especially when the farm team has the same name as the parent team. If they have a different name, then yeah, sure, but Devils, Sharks, Bruins etc, makes sense to copy the parent logo and incorporate it, plus, they are also advertising for the parent that way as well. PBruin fans are invariably BBruin fans too.

I like it:

I think the NHL GMs would rather have a prospect passing the puck to a guy dressed like he would be in the NHL.

The teams will sell more merchandise, I mean who wanted to be caught at a Rats game in 2006-07 with a Devils style jersey???

Also with the number of teams it's almost impossible to tell/remember who's affialited with who. Milwalkee was in town a couple of years ago and it had everyone stumped.

There is a point where to draw the line.... Albany's logo this year is awful. Lowell's pulled it off somehow with the cartoon Devil. Worcester and Binghamton tweaked everything enough IMO.

Meh it's grown on me, and the uniforms are a tried and tested design - don't change it if it works.

Just another sign that the AHL is just the NHL-lite.

Personally I think teams should have their own identity/colors, but should wear an affiliation shoulder patch.

+1 for the patch. I like the idea of the team having it's own identity.

Team jerseys already do have those shoulder patches. I can't think of any that don't.

Sometimes being identical can work out fine. Abbotsford has Calgary's uniform design, but with their own colour scheme and logo. Sure, the logo looks like the Go2 Cola from Safeway, but it works.

My point is that is all they should have. AHL teams should have their own identity, which includes name, logo and color scheme.

Off the top of my head I do not believe that Rochester, Milwaukee or Chicago have affiliation patches on their jerseys.

I don't like it either but this is really a problem for minor league sports, in general, not just the AHL.

Here's my vote that the Checkers should dump the Canes jerseys and go back to this:

Ah, my apologies for not reading properly.

Yeah, I see nothing on any of the official jerseys from last season. Which throws me off, because this is what they wore for the pre-season games here in Abbotsford last October.

So it looks like they did previously. I don't know why they'd have them for that set of games and then use their regular ones later. Note the old colours for the Canucks logo.

Those above are their preseason ones they wore that were no Edge... I believe left overs from their previous style and just reused for preseason.

Makes sense, that's what I figured upon further review. Silly recycled jerseys made a mockery of me.

No worries... technically you were correct if the discussion was 5 years ago

At least you guys have real preseason jerseys, the Admirals just wear old black practice jerseys with numbers.

Interesting tread. I can count 5 different teams in Sweden that uses the green/black big star 98-99 Dallas uniform. Embarrassing and total lack of ideas and originality. When i asked a friend playing for a 4th division club that uses the Thrashers jerseys why they skate around as wanna bee Atlantas he retaliated right back saying that the equipment manager thought the jerseys looked cool and that no one ever questioned this issue before.

The reason they use the jerseys is because the manufacturers only make a limited number of color schemes......

If I had my way, every AHL team would be required to have a fan-submitted design for one home and one road game each year. Selling the gamers would put a little cash in the teams' pockets, it could break up the monotony of seeing largely drab on-ice designs, and it could go far enough to see a new look for the team going forward if it's well-received enough.

It's been going on for a long time. Off the top of my head:
Detroit - Adirondack wore recycled NHL Wings jerseys
NY Rangers - Binghamton did the same, Hartford wore alternate patterns made by Bauer and then SP
Toronto - St John's wore recrested Leafs blanks, as did Newmarket before that
Montreal - Fredericton wore recycled Habs jerseys, as did Sherbrooke
Edmonton - Cape Breton had recrested blanks, as did Nova Scotia, Hamilton just used the same pattern
Philadelphia - Maine wore recrested blanks
Calgary - Moncton wore recrested blanks; Saint John wore the same jersey as Calgary (down to the flaming C)
Ottawa - PEI had recrested blanks
Boston - Providence had recrested blanks until the AHL got the Edge
New Jersey - Utica and Albany wore recrested blanks

That said, I wholeheartedly support more minor league independence, whether just in logo or in overall design including color scheme. I loved when Saint John ditched the flaming C and brought out the smoking dragon. I've always been a fan of the Philly Phantoms' various designs, or the total off-the-wall designs of the Beast of New Haven, the Kentucky Thoroughblades, or the pre-Wild Houston Aeros.

Seriously? I think it is pretty acceptable that 4th division team uses NHL blanks...perhaps not everybody on a better beer league level has the resources to design their unique jerseys?
