Bobrovsky come a long way already

An interesting article about Bobrovsky's personality and past coaches, team.

The kid certainly gets it, and has his head screwed on correctly, unlike a lot of Russians. The more I read about him, the more I like him.

ST. LOUIS - No one is suggesting that the Flyers' oh-so-old Great Goalie Quest has ended just because Sergei "Bob" Bobrovsky excelled in his NHL debut Thursday in Pittsburgh.

But his impressive opening-night start, coupled with his sensational preseason, has made general manager Paul Holmgren's off-season moves much more understandable.

In the off-season, you'll recall, Holmgren passed on a chance to add a proven goalie such as Evgeni Nabokov, Marty Turco, Antti Niemi, or even Dan Ellis. Instead, he decided to bring back Michael Leighton and Brian Boucher.

Yes, the duo had starred in last season's first three playoff rounds, but Leighton stumbled in the Stanley Cup Finals and most fans wondered why the Flyers didn't upgrade the position.

Now we have a better understanding.

Turns out Holmgren figured he had a young goalie - Bobrovsky - with the potential to be the Flyers' long-term answer.

I really don't know how to feel about this statement. The anti-Russian sentiment in the Flyers fanbase is just silly IMO. Just because the incredibly few we ever pick up tend not to pan out is no reason to pan an entire nation worth of hockey players...

...but anyway, Bobocop really does have the right disposition. I love everything I read about the kid, he seems to want to learn and improve. I'm really hoping he turns into something special, which is certainly possible with proper care and development.

Also, how much ****ing swagger does this kid have? "But I also remember one particular moment. Someone once compared Sergei to Vladislav Tretyak and he was a little upset and very quick in responding that 'I'm not Tretyak, I'm Bobrovsky'."

I love it.

Love the kid's disposition and philosophy. Definitely my favorite prospect in the system.

Can't get over the fact that he looks like a slim version of Neville Longbottom though.

I think he looks a lot like Sam Huntington (actor from Fanboys and Superman Returns):

I call BS on this. Holmgren did not know that Bobrobsky would be the starter, nor did he think he would be a legit challenger -- nobody did. In the article, Reese himself said that Bob was more polished than he thought he would be, and very few of our suits had even seen Bobrovsky play.

He also wouldn't (shouldn't) have given Leighton that type of money and paid him like a starter if he 'knew' that Bob would be as good as he is.

That's good stuff right there. Gotta love the players that just don't quit. I really hope this kid pans out.

I somewhat agree with this, though I think it's somewhere in the middle.

Holmgren went after Bob, knew he had Eriksson, and knew he had Riopel.

That's a reason I couldn't see him committing or trading for someone like Quick/Bernier, Schneider, Price, Harding, etc.

That doesn't excuse not going after a vet for a couple years, at the same amount of years as Leighton.

As you noted, that's pretty important. Knowing that there was something in the pot for the future does not mean you ignore the present. Nobody could've known that Bobrovsky would be this good this quickly. You can speculate all you want, but Bobrovsky was a huge mystery in terms of how he would react to North America.

I would assume so, but I don't think it's been announced yet.
