Too bad for Jeff. He would be on the team as the extra d-man if Fletcher wasn't dumb enough to give him that outrageous salary.

In fairness, Finger is actually a pretty good defenseman.

I was hoping this might mean a bigger move was coming....but probably means Lebda is ready to go for Wednesday.. then Gunner is in the pressbox (Komi?) and finger is gonzo

No he isn't. He can hit and block shots well, he does a number of things good, but nothing great. It's his salary that makes him look bad, he would be solid bottom pairing defenseman if he was paid like one.

If he were being paid 1 or 1.5 mil per season, no one would be complaining about him in the lineup. Bad value contract != bad player. Sucks to see this happening to him just because his cap hit is grossly out of line with his value.

Finger was pretty good in 08/09 and then pretty horrible after that.

Still he is a servicable player that would probably be a #6/#7th defense men but due to his salary he just cannot get that opportunity anymore.

Meh didn't like him or hate him but this is about time.

TOR puts Jeff Finger on waivers. Greiss (SJ), Carlsson (CHI), Schaefer (BOS), Letourneau-Leblond (NJD) all clear waivers.

No, he's terrible. When he hits he's invariably doing it out of position. He has absolutely no hockey sense whatsoever and is a defensive dman which is a recipie for disaster. As for his salary, yes he's obscenely overpaid, but the idee no one would care if he was making less is ludicrous. How much was Aki Berg making when he was being booed? Or Nik Antropov as a 21 year old? Being bad is being bad.

Considering his contract you mean.

He slots in the 5-7 range on most teams. @ 1-1.5m per, Finger is a solid and not hated defenseman.

Leafs nation is hard on this guy for not earning his money, completely disregarding the fact that he isn't capable of doing so. People should really be angry that Fletch overpaid by 2m for a bottom pairing defenseman.

If you were Finger, how hard is ur July 1st decision when a group of teams offer you in the 1m range, and one team offers you 3.5m? Easy decision for most red blooded human beings.

Don't ever forget that a senile old man signed Finger to this ridiculous deal.

If he slotted into most team's bottom pairings, he wouldn't have been scrached by the worst defensive team in hockey for large chunks of last season in favour of Garnet Exelby.

Finger had a decent 08/09, but did himself no favours last year. Then again, neither did anybody else on the team. The amount of even-strength points the guy picks up is actually quite remarkable for the amount he plays.

Probably a decent depth defenseman on most teams, but that contract is an anchor.

They were trying to build trade value for Exelby, as he requested a trade.

If you watched Finger when he ACTUALLY PLAYED consistently in Toronto, he is an EXCELLENT 5 on 5 defenseman. He has a good shot that is hard and accurate. He blocks shots well and can hit. He is not adept at clearing the crease and is average at moving the puck. He shines on the PK and in the offensive zone, IMO.

Under the pressure he was under to earn his salary, its hard to play once every 2 weeks and still get into the game.

Finger is one of those guys who needs consistent ice time to get on his game. He always seemed to get better with increased ice time, but was generally unsuccessful when he was put into a game for the first time in a month.

I'm not even a Finger fan and I hate the way he plays. I just think anyone saying he can't play bottom pairing on a lot of NHL teams is exaggerating.

I never thought I'd see that yellow tag beside Finger's name this season with Burke's comments, lo and behold there it is. Make sure to buy the Marlies expensive dinners once in a while, Jeff.

Exelby was playing ahead of Finger before he asked to be traded. They were alternating back and forth. The point being Jeff Finger couldn't beat out Exelby.

IYO.

Finger was as good as Exelby IMO. Exelby knew he wasn't here long term so he went out and played care free. Much easier situation then Fingers with that contract always over his head.

If they were playing back and forth, then he wasn't playing ahead of Finger. It seemed more a case of Burke promising Exelby he would do all he could to get him a job than him being better than Finger. Check out the Salei example to see this is his operating MO.
