Captain Craig Rivet participated in the morning skate but will not play in tonight's match-up. The defenseman has been unable to play since suffering a throat contusion on September 24.

“Craig is doing pretty good. He’s skating on his own. He should be able to skate with the team by [Friday] probably,” Ruff said.

"Van has to be held out," said Ruff, who doesn’t believe Vanek will miss the season opener Friday in Ottawa. "He’s going to probably see our doctor again tomorrow night.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sabres captain Craig Rivet figures there’s a bright side to suffering a scary throat contusion and missing all six of the team’s exhibition contests.

“It’s not disappointing at all because it gives my shoulder that much more time to heal,” the defenseman said in a raspy voice after he practiced Saturday at HSBC Arena. “You got to take the positive out of the situation. It was kind of a fluke accident what happened, and I’m going to build for the first game.”

Rivet’s optimistic he’ll be ready for Friday’s season opener in Ottawa. He plans to see the doctor this weekend and could be cleared to play, Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said.

“My throat feels pretty good,” Rivet said. “I’ve been off for a couple of days not skating with the team. You lose a bit of jump in your legs and wind. I have to take the time to get everything working again, and we’ll go from there.”

Ruff said Lalime (groin) and Rivet (throat contusion) were progressing, and both skated Sunday. Vanek (head/neck) may be back on the ice Tuesday, but Ruff said he was not overly concerned the Sabres' top winger would miss the opener.

Thomas Vanek didn't skate with a line at practice today in HSBC Arena but he skated early and then went through the full workout, including some drills. So it's looking like a pretty decent bet he'll be ready for Friday night's season opener in Ottawa.

"Today was a good test for me and it felt fine," said Vanek, who suffered a neck injury Thursday in Montreal. "Hopefully I can be back full time tomorrow."

"I think today was a good step for him to get back on the ice," said coach Lindy Ruff.

Ruff also said backup goalie Patrick Lalime had a good day and may be ready as well

I really really REALLY don't like where this Vanek injury is going.

How did this go from "he would have kept playing" to "it's been a week and we're not really concerned that he'll miss the opener, but he's seeing the doctor again?"

This has months-long nagging injury written all over it. And for the second season in a row now for TV.

To be fair, he suffered last season from a shoulder injury, an abdominal injury and finally ankle sprains at the end of March and again in the playoffs. This preseason injury, which Vanek told reporters came on the play before and during his goal in Montreal, was clearly a neck-related injury - it was obvious during the telecast that one of the Habs cross-checked him across the back of his head/neck.

Whether or not it becomes a nagging injury, no one can know but since it's close to a head injury and involves the team's key offensive player, it's not surprising to see the Sabres treat it cautiously.

You don’t fool around with head injuries. I head a headache until Sunday, but for heaven’s sake the doctors couldn’t find anything that would mean a concussion.

Was it 336 straight games going into tonight for Pommer? With a concussion, he's at least a week out but likely longer. Clearly not how everyone wanted a lineup shuffle... but it appears they will get even smaller with more Gerbe in the lineup.

First the good news: Coach Lindy Ruff said Jason Pominville was sitting up in the Sabres' locker room after Monday's game, dealing with only a concussion and a seven- or eight-stitch cut above the eye after taking his vicious hit from behind from Chicago's Niklas Hjalmarsson.

Of course, the bad news is that Pominville is certainly going to be out of the lineup for an undetermined period of time.

"He's doing OK," Ruff said of Pominville. "He got sewn up [7-8 stitches above the eye], he's sitting up. Obviously, he has a concussion."

Pominville, the team's iron man, was playing in his 336th consecutive game but that streak will almost certainly end. Ruff wouldn't speculate how long Pominville would be out, but concussions usually are seven days or more.

"I'm not even going to guess right now," Ruff said. "Obviously, it's going to be a period of time."

Pominville update:

Quote:
"He’s doing OK," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said today. "He’s at home resting. He still has some symptoms, but he’s feeling better, so hopefully he just progresses. As soon as the symptoms are gone, you start to progress with him. You start to get him exercise.

"Typically, in these cases, that can take any amount of time. Obviously, you’ve got to factor in when a player doesn’t have any fitness for three, four, five days, then it takes a few days to get back in the grind, too.

"We’re just hoping first and foremost that he starts feeling well in the next few days."

I'm guessing he'll miss about 8 or 9 games. Hopefully this injury isn't a lingering one though, because concussions usually are...
