Except that both teams ended up wasting a whole pick.

In Calgary's case we completely wasted a 2nd on Stoll and then wisely spent a 3rd rounder on Lombardi.

In Edm's case they completely wasted a 7th rounder on Lombardi and then wisely spent a 2nd rounder on Stoll.

Our 3rd rounder looks like even better value then their 2nd rounder. But we wasted a 2nd round pick and they wasted a 7th round pick, can't gloss that over. It's kinda like a trade, except for this fact.

Well, you could look at it that way, but they could also be viewed as having saved both organizations from upsetting their salary structures by overpaying. If memory serves, there was a higher-than-average number of unsigned players from that draft year. A case of the agents getting a little overambitious?

The part about the both organizations wisely using their picks on the re-entry of Stoll and Lombardi is well-taken. However, a 7th round pick is hardly any huge loss. In Calgary's case, the draft pick was wasted, as much as asset (Stoll) was squandered, due to a late fax. Then, Edmonton wouldn't have drafted Stoll, and might possibly have been considering re-drafting Lombardi, who was destined to re-enter in a higher round.

To view this strictly in terms of the draft picks: a 2nd and 3rd round pick for Matt Lombardi looks damn good. This wasn't the main intention for the thread. Then again, the Stoll vs. Lombardi debate is very relevant.

According to Jim Kelley the deal was at the point where Button had received permission from Flames ownership to deal Iginla for Peca and thought he had a done deal. When he went back to Regier to finalize it, Regier insisted he add a defenseman. Kelley reported that Button was very upset with Regier. Kelley swears up and down he confirmed it with sources in the Sabres management. My guess is that Regier was catching wind of the Sabres financial problems by this time and he deliberately sabotaged the deal rather than taking on what would be another contract hassle.

Are you completely sure about that one? Gagne, yes. The other names mentioned more often were Williams and Woywitka.

Actually Sutter said he was exploring what was there from before, I don't think he was ever serious about trading our superstar/best player in the world for Gagne.

Actually one of the reasons Lindros didn't end up in Toronto is Antropov. Clarke wasn't a big fan, especially with the injury troubles he was having at the time.

The Flyers weren't making that deal last year.

agreed.

resident moron Calgary Herald columnist Bruce Dowbiggin constantly prints that the Flames were set to receive some combination of Pitkanen,Woywitka,Williams,Gagne and Handzus for Iginla. he does this every time Iginla goes in a slump as proof that the Flames are morons

of course it's highly unlikely any combination of these players (ie Gagne/Pitkanen plus a third player) were ever on the table
