If that first line continues to click, we'll have no choice but to keep him at the same salary or possibly higher if that's what his demands are (and he at least semi-earns it).
We're in no position to be letting top 6 forwards walk and although he will still be an RFA, you don't want to start creating problems for the future by using his RFA status as a way to knock down his value and insult him.
He did not do anything to have a raise, I would drop his salary to 2.5m per for 2 years. This can change if he have a breakout year of over 30 goals.
First, go back and read the first post...going 25-25-50 is "earning" a good contract, plus it's not about what you want to give him, his agent will want market value which IMHO is around 3.5 at that production.
Gauthier better not give him anything more then what he is making now,2.5 per year + bonuses if he hits them he could make 3.75 or something around that. With a guy like that for him to make more money maybe a challenge is needed
If he keeps playing like he has in the first 3 games....I'd re-sign him to a $4 million/2 year deal. If he struggles in his first year of the new contract, trade him.....but as long as he keeps skating hard and hitting like he is right now, I'd keep him around. He's got too much skill to just let walk away from the team. If we can get his head and heart into this team....he'll be much better than last year for us.

He isn't signing an ELC or above 35 so he can't have incentives in his contract.
I like the other posters idea regarding giving him a bonus based contract. Sounds like a good plan. 2.5 mil + 500k if we make the post season + 750k if he scores above 30g and nets 50+ points. How does that sound? I know I wouldn't complain giving a 30g guy 3.75mil
We need money for Markov, Gorges, PK Subban, Price in 2 years...
I don't want the CH to tie up 3 mil or more for A.Kostitsyn...not again (once was enough, imo).
A.Kosts can be replaced with a cheaper warrior type of player via UFA market or by trading/packaging a.Kosts...
Just my opinion .
p.s.: next year...Lars Eller in top 6 (for sure) and another top 6 player acquired via UFA/trade... and I still want Eller to one day be our 2nd line or 1st line center...maybe this year he will be in our top 6. Patience (no pressure on him, let him take his time to get accustomed to the NHL...).
Next year...
?? - Gomez - Gionta
Eller - Pleks - Cammaleri (this year? + next year)
He isn't signing an ELC or above 35 so he can't have incentives in his contract.
IMO this should be looked at when preparing the next collective bargaining agreement. I think Bonuses are great for a player and with the rule that bonuses payed can be used against the cap over 2 seasons I don't see why only players on ELC or 35+ are elligible.
How are we able to even guesstimate what he would sign for?
he's not signing a contract until the season comes to a end.
If he struggles this year, to the point where he won't deserve a raise, than there's a good chance he'll get a higher offer in the KHL and prbly play on a team with his brother.
IF, his numbers improve, than he may very well consider a raise with the Habs.
But to take the same money or less seems unlikely to me, given the opportunities that will likely present themselves in the KHL.

2mil a year? Please next time you don't want a player re-signed, don't make a low ball guess, it brings nothing to the discussion.
Plus, Markov will not have a raise as he's already earning 5.75$ per year and he's getting older, players like Gorges never break the bank, and Hamrlik and Spacek's contract off the book will more than cover Subban and Price's raises.
If Kostitsyn can have a ~25g season, I'd sign him for 3.75/2years. A small raise but we're taking 1 year off his UFA period so I guess it's fair enough.
