Isles GM Mike Milbury writing a travel journal of his trip to two Chinese cities and the hockey franchises in the Asian Hockey League?
But as a Canadian raised on hockey but living in South Korea, let me tell you that the two Chinese teams in the Asian Hockey League are as bad as it gets, bottom of the barrel, and this barrel ain't too good.
Milbury compares the league to the ECHL minus goaltending. That's a generous comparison. I'd say the UHL is better. Perhaps the league compares with the Texas teams I've seen play a couple of times.
But hockey is hockey and a fan takes what he can get and makes the most of it.
The level of play probably is best equated to our East Coast Hockey League, with one notable exception: the goaltenders. Think Tommy Salo on a bad night.
Now, Tommy Salo is a standing joke among hockey fans in Sweden too, but this has to stop somewhere. Salo was a top goalie before the 2002 Olympics. He might have been on a downward slope for about a year before that, but he was one of Edmontons best players for a few seasons. He was also a great netminder at the international level between '94 and '00. He has now retired and there are plenty of other (bad) goalies to pick on.
