Really strange move by Anaheim.

Mikkelson actually started the season on the top pairing with Visnovsky. Since then Lydman and Lilja have been added to the lineup...but Mikkelson would have been fine on the third pair with Lilja, with Brookbank healthy scratched as 7th dman.

Somehow Murray thought he could sneak Mikkelson down to the AHL.

Well, nice asset management Murray!!

does mikkelson even have potential to be a #4 guy? if not this isn't that bad for anaheim(now it is, but not for the future)

No he doesn't. He'll most likely be a bottom pairing guy if he sticks around in the NHL. It sucks to lose a young player looking at our defense right now, but really this move doesn't hurt Anaheim much. We need to give our big defensive prospects more time on the ice in Syracuse and Mikkelson going down there wouldn't have helped. I wish him the best though and maybe he'll be a decent pickup for the Flames, he started the season decently hopefully he can keep it up.

Why make up a lie? Mikkelson started on the 3rd pairing with Brookbank and was moved to the 1st pairing once Sutton went down with an injury. And oh, might I add Sutton was only on the top pairing because Lydman was out with double-vision.

Murray did not think he could sneak Mikkelson in the AHL and I'll tell you why. Mikkelson would have been elgible for recall waivers, in which case numerous teams would have made a move for Mikkelson. Murray knew he might lose Mikkelson and he didn't care, as he shouldn't. Mikkelson has looked terrible all season, especially in the last two games he played.

No... he is a #6 defenseman at best.

We'll take a #6 D-man making that kind of cash, thanks. Flames will clearly need to get rid of a D contract sooner or later, and it'll likely be either Sarich or Staios, both lower pairing guys. Makes sense to bring in a young guy making little money to take their spot.

Sutton was injured early in the first game. I didn't make up a lie. Please do not make these kind of accusations.

Mikkelson would not be eligible for recall waivers as he has a two way contract, with an AHL salary of only 62,500. he only had to clear waivers on the way down, not the way up.

I thought Calgary had a bunch of depth at D and a bunch of young guys pushing to make the lineup... ? Why pick up Mikkelson???

Pardy is injured, Negrin is having surgery, Kronwall and Erixon are playing in Sweden, and Pelech has to clear waivers to go up and down. Brodie needs to develop by playing bigger minutes as the Heat's #1 dman.

Since Staios has not yet been hit by an asteroid (the only way we have any hope of getting rid of him, as the Sutters seem to consistently give him a free pass no matter how crappy he plays), Mikkelson likely draws #7 duty.

Why wouldn't he think that? Borderline bottom-pairing guys, even at his age, aren't highly coveted. There should be no reason Ryan Parent clears waivers(among many others) and Mikkelson doesn't. I'm really shocked he was claimed.

Honestly, though, I don't think he'll be in Calgary long. Maybe if he plays lights out, but if he plays like his normal self, I predict he'll be in Syracuse by Halloween.

I like this pickup. Good smooth-skating defensemen for the bottom-pairing.

Not a bad pick up for Calgary.
