So? He probably took a chance for some journalistic glory because everybody knows Markov is getting better and better. You can't really do the same with a contract. I still remember the L'Attaque à 5 episode where he said Gainey offered Latendresse to everybody and Lajoie made of him the whole time.

I still remember what Tony told JC Lajoie

"I have NHL general managers on my speed dial. You have Pizza Hut on yours."

Tony was being polite.

He could've added St-Hubert, Domino's, Score's, Double-Pizza, Mike's, Chinese takeout...

@Real_ESPNLeBrun

Agent Don Meehan just denied to me reports of Andrei Markov signing extension soon with Habs. Meehan: ``I have not had any negotiations whatsoever with Montreal. These reports of a signing are absolute nonsense.''

Chara was making 7,5 mil per.

He signed his probable last contract last week, for 7 years, and the cap hit is around 1 mil less, close to 6,5 per year.

Markov is only two years younger than Chara, and it probably will be his last contract, so the years at the end of the contract will probably be lesser than what he makes at the start of the contract, hence why his cap hit will go down a bit.

Markov is as valuable as Charra if not more, he is paid well below market value at 5.75 mil so he'll get a raise even if he takes a home town discount and it goes 5-6 years with declining salary. I can't see him signing for less than 33 mil over 5 years(6.6 mil cap hit) or 39 mil over 6 years(6.5 cap hit).

I think Markov signs for less money than he currently receives now if he signs 5 year or more. I'll be disappointed if Chara takes a discount but Markov doesn't.

He already signed below market value. He could've easily had 6,5-7 mil on his last contract.

Again, your whole analysis totally does not (even if you mention it) take into account the last years of the contract where he will quite probably get less.

7-7-7-5-5-3, this IMO would be without a hometown discount.

I see it more like 6-6-6-5-5-5. 33 for 6 years.

You might not see it, but there are a looooot of people here who do see it.

Going orward we'll have Subban, Gorges and Markov. That's a solid solid core.

In defense of Tony M...he never said this signing is imminent or is currently being worked on. Not sure why Pierre Lebrun had to go confirming with Don Meehan...but I guess being the FIRST to counter Tony M's news was just too much to pass up lol

Its funny watching all these media types on twitter now...

"There is no way Don Meehan will go on the record & confirm that he & P.Gauthier talking contract for Markov. In Mtl, everything top secret."

"If you recall last yr I reported Markov called out Price after an OT loss vs Blues. It was denied by many. Price confirmed it 12 days ago."

The war has started...

Exactly. In any rumor, if there's one party you can count on to lie through their teeth without flinching, it's the player agents.
