Vokoun Leads NHL's 3 Stars of the Week

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=540876

Quote:
Vokoun stopped 89 of 91 shots in posting a 2-1-0 record with a 0.67 goals-against average and .978 save percentage, highlighted by back-to-back shutouts. Vokoun turned aside 33 of 35 shots in a 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks Oct. 11, stopped 27 shots in a 3-0 victory over the Calgary Flames Oct. 14 and made 29 saves for his 40th career shutout as the Panthers blanked the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-0 in the home opener at BankAtlantic Center Oct. 16.
Ah... sweet recognition...

ok guys, if vokie asked for a resign...would you sign him?

i would.. i mean the guy is just an amazing goalie..

imagine vokie / markstrom tangent..

i saw thornton getting signed 3 years for less then he made... and alot of players are doing that to maintain the structure of the team..

and vokie.. is the freakin giant pillar in the middle of this team..

it's hard just to see him get traded.. from our play so far we are not doing bad.. looks like a totally diffrent team.... i mean he likes it so far.. you can tell by the interviews.. and maybe this team actually changes it's culture to a team heading to the playoffs..

what do you guys think?
poll anyone?

I've been saying for a while I believe the best plan is to resign Vokoun for a couple years and bring Markstrom along slowly. Trade Clemmer either at the deadline this year or early next year and bring Markstrom in as the backup for a year before having him take over as #1 in 2012-13.

looks like a good plan...

the only bad thing i can think of in my head is that there could be a possible trade with vokie involving really good players/prospects..

if that looks juicy.. it would seem a bit harder to keep him..

but i say we keep him..

build from the net out.. and like you said desert.. keep marsktrom as a backup..

only thing is i like markstrom in the ahl.. he gets to play more.. and get more comfortable with the north American hockey style..

If he accepted less money and the contract was for a short term (say two years and possibly an option for a third if the CBA still allows for team options in contracts) then absolutely.

But with Markstrom coming up, we don't want to park him in the minors or the backup bench while his RFA years whittle away...so signing Vokoun long-term doesn't make sense right now.

If we make the playoffs he might reconsider some sort of deal, if not I think he will seek other options with real contenders

I think it really depends on if we're on a run for the playoffs. If we're out of it by February like last season, there's no reason to re-sign him and might as well get the best trade value we can for him since he can help out a contender. If we're in the running though, I'd have no problem keeping him and let Markstrom be brought up slowly.

If we could get something like 2 yrs/10M, I'd resign him. Markstrom is no guarantee to be excellent as highly touted as he is, and we already have an elite goalie.

At the very least, it should ensure that we don't dump Vokoun for nothing at the deadline. If we can't get good value for him in March, I'd resign him. I wouldn't let him go for nothing just to trade him unless it was a Bouwmeester situation where he told Tallon he wouldn't resign.

agree with this. markstrom is very similar in talent to bernier for the kings and hes had a year in the ahl already where he dominated, but struggled the other night in hist first nhl start of the season. i think its better to bring them in as backups and let them win the job. so unless we are in full tank mode i say get rid of clemmy.

with that said, dont walk away from a sweetheart deal at the deadline.

I think the issue with re-signing Vokoun would be years, not money. Even at his present salary, I could see Tallon willing to give him 2 years. However, after that, Vokoun would be 37 and Markstrom would be done with his entry level contract and TiVo on the roster would make no sense unless Markstrom is used as a trade chip. If TiVo is re-signed for two years then I would think they would buy out the last year of Clem's contract next season and allow Markstrom two seasons as TiVo's backup.

Two or three years ago we had a really respectable ranking. Wish I could remember the site, I believe CBS had us higher than other lists for a good while. Just not sure if I'm remembering top 10 or 15... almost positive it was top 10.

Saw that. It actually made me laugh! It's very early, they're playing well out of the game for once and there seems to be some consistency and chemistry in the games. Tops in the league in GA, but take away the 6-0 win over the 'ning and it's only 6 goals for. Hopefully Weiss and Frolik get going in the scoring department. If they do, this team could really exceed expectations.

Love the start, but need to get those "timely goals" (as Potvin used to put it).
