I say deal, but why would Boston want to do that?

Wheeler so far in his career (2 seasons) has been around a 20-20 guy. I'm not sure what they expect his ceiling to be, but even if he is projected to be a 20-20 or 25-25 guy his whole career then I wouldn't trade him for Gilroy.

Boston has to cut payroll by about 4m when Savard/Sturm come back - was reading an article about this somewhere(sorry don't remember the source).

Agreed with above. I don't see it. Gilroy just isn't good enough to warrant that kind of return. Though I do remember Bruins fans doing a fair amount of hating on Wheeler, he still has a lot of upside.

I see where you guy's are coming from. I just thought the Rangers could use some offense, the Bruins are shopping Wheeler, and according to ESPN they are looking for a young defenseman, so why not?

1) It's not a bad guy for the Rangers to target.

2) Gilroy isn't really a young defenseman.

Gilroy is 26, makes 2.1 mil this year and is scratched on a day to day basis in competition with an NHL journeyman defenseman in Steve Eminger.

Calgary picked Chris Higgins over him in the Jokinen deal.

Im gonna venture a guess that his trade value isnt too high.

Rangers do this deal all day long, but I doubt the B's will.

If the 3rd was changed to a 2nd <--and I believe they have 2 seconds then maybe it might make a little more sense for the B's?

I do think that Gilroy can carry some trade value in the sense that another GM might take a stab at him thinking he may be somewhat misused here in NY, or just not on the same page with the coach. Which was very much the problem last season.

I like Wheeler, and I think I'd probably do this deal, but where would he fit?

Assuming you call up Valentenko from Hartford to pair up with Sauer, you still need to find a spot for Wheeler. Doubt he unseats Gaborik, Frolov, or Dubinsky in the top-six, so do they move Callahan to the 3rd and break up our best line? I dunno if I see it.

Again, I really like Wheeler, but I can't see him bumping Callahan out of the top-six despite the fact that he's probably the more skilled of the two. Dubinsky - AA - Wheeler is a whole lot of big on one line, though.

True, but he is young to the NHL. If the Rangers could make a deal like this, I hope Sather would do it. Gilroy is being shopped, Wheeler is being shopped. Who knows, maybe the Bruins would do it?

Didn't really think about that. If the Rangers acquired him right now they could place him on a line with Frolov until Gaby gets back, but after that it would be pretty hard to work out. Maybe Boogey could become a healthy scratch from time to time and that would open a spot for Wheeler.

Why trade Gilroy along with a 3rd round pick when Gilroy's a free agent? If we don't want him anymore, just ride out this last year of his contract and don't re-sign him.

Pretty sure the idea would be to pick up a quality NHL forward while getting rid of a surplus D-man.

Basically you're saying: Why trade Gilroy for something worthwhile when we can let him go for nothing at the end of the year?

No? The bruins would never do that. I'm guessing u liked wheelers play last night but gilroy and a 3rd is worth very very little.

Of course he would do it if he could. He'd getting value for very little.

Right now, Gilroy is not the guy who is going to be a center piece of a deal. He might be a throw in, but he's not shown anything that would make a team say "we have to get this guy." He is not an everyday player. And he's 26 and his greatest success has come while playing against kids who were as much as 5 or 6 years younger. His age is an issue. He's older than every Ranger defenseman save Eminger, Girardi and Rozsival.

There's just not a lot of value there. Especially with his contract.

Right now, I would swap Grachev for Wheeler and not look back.

It is, maybe add in a 3rd and maybe they stay on the phone for twice as long if it was Gilroy in the deal.
