Contract negotiations aimed at re-signing Flyers forward Jeff Carter have taken an upswing after weeks of slow but determined negotiations.
“You know me, I don’t say much, but I will acknowledge that I’ve had some conversations with Paul and we’re making progress,” agent Rick Curran told CSNPhilly.com on Wednesday.
“For the moment, that’s probably all I’m going to say. I don’t like to discuss negotiations.”
The Flyers, who often re-negotiate in-season with key personnel, would like to have Carter re-signed before he becomes a restricted free agent on July 1.
Curran is among the partners in The Orr Hockey Group.
That the two sides are making progress to re-sign the center-turned-winger is a positive given that two weeks ago, it didn’t appear as though any progress was being made.
“Rick’s got a lot of clients and I’ve had other things to do – it’s not like we’ve avoided each other,” said general manager Paul Holmgren. “Our club has had some issues – a lot of [crap] has been happening. A lot of [crap].”
Holmgren was referring to the numerous injuries that plagued the Flyers at season’s start, plus the poor start of the team through nine games.
This would become Carter’s third pro contract. He is in the final year of a three-year, $15 million re-sign he inked in June 2008 with a $5 million salary cap hit. His original three-year contract as a first-round draft pick in 2003 was worth $2.827 million overall.
There’s been some speculation whether the Flyers would offer Carter the kind of lengthy, long-term contract that Mike Richards got – 12 years, $69 million (December 2007).
“I’m not sure which way it’s going to go yet,” Holmgren said. “We’re looking at a couple of different things.”

Anyways, nothing new here. Homer has said many, many times that he's not trading Carter.
I have no doubt that both Carter and Giroux will be re-signed. They're both very good RFAs and RFAs usually don't have much leverage. I'm more concerned about how much Homer will overpay.
I think so as well. Anything above 7 is when my eyebrows start to seriously go up, but there aren't that many 40-40 guys around in the league who are also great defensively.
I would be fine with giving him a Richards like contract. Especially if the cap keeps going up the long term contracts will look genius in a couple years.
I do NOT want to pay Carter more than Richards. He hasn't earned it in my opinion. But then again, Richards got a crazy length which certainly lowered the cap hit.
If Homer can keep it around 6, I'd be pretty happy.

I dont see how signing Carter a mill and a half more then Richards as a good thing... Plus, personally, I'd take Giroux and Leino over Carter any day of the week. Carter's "size and faceoff" ability isnt worth an extra 1-2 mil.

We have around 47 mil, including Lappy, 45/46 mil without Lappy. Say the cap goes up to 60 mil, we will have about 15 mil to sign a **** ton of players. You throw 7 mil at Carter, you have about 8 mil to sign 6 positions. You pretty much say goodbye to Giroux and Leino and will most likely just throw in scrubs in the other positions. Im 100% not comfortable with Carter being our highest paid player on the team. Right now I am on the fence with Carter, but if he gets 6.5-7 mil, I will not be a fan of his, and Ill be pretty pissed if we lose Giroux because he wants that much. He wants that much, I say bye bye and wait for the price to go down, if not, Ill be willing to take the two firsts or so for him.
