I can't wait to drink the tears of Carter Haters once he's re-signed to a big 7-year extension.
While 7 is a bit long, I can swallow a 5-6 year deal at $6-6.5

Ugh, not exactly. As mentioned earlier, Crosby gets closer to $9 and Ovy has years of getting $10, but the actual cap hits are slightly reduced since they both signed longterm.
In many ways, Carter at $6.5 is more then reasonable given his production. The only reason someone would object would be personal dislike, the stats back up a contract like that.

The problem is we have so much locked up in our D, that we need cheap forwards right now.
We NEED to move one of Timonen, Carle, Meszaros in the next year anyway. It's retarded to have 5 defenseman making over $3 (especially since 3 of them are 4+) but only have 4 forwards over $3 (with one of our high paid forwards being freaking Hartnell).
If I was the GM, my offseason plan is simple. I'd trade Timonen while he still has value (his value to cap hit is decreasing quickly as he ages, but it's tradeable as the last two years of his deal he only makes $8 total). I'd also trade Hartnell and Carcillo in order to keep some of the other players with priority going to
Carter
Giroux
---
---
Leino
---
---
Zherdev.
If possible, I would move Hartnell first and see how far I can go before moving Timonen, but let's face it, we can't afford to field a good and balanced squad with Briere and Timonen taking up nearly $13 mill of our cap space and them both starting next season at the ages of 34 and 36 respectively.
Trade Carle, Walker, Shelley, Leighton
Keep Giroux, Carter and Leino
Let Zherdev walk
If I were the GM, I would do all of this except I'd keep Shelley and trade Carcillo. My reasoning is Shelley is a true heavyweight, we'd have to pay to dump him, and we have other guys who can fight the welterweights, but no one but Shelley to fight the heavyweights. I'd probably move Boosh over Leighton also, mostly the age factor.
Also, I'd address Zherdev last, but I would look to keep him around if possible given the cap and his salary demands (as well as his performance this season).

Sadly, I agree. We just can't afford to pay him that much to be a #2 defensemen when he is 36.
Kimo said unless something drastic happens, he is going to retire as a Flyer (it was a Euroflyer article posted during the summer. I dont have the link so dont ask. Look it up.) I highly doubt he gets traded. I dont think it would be smart to rely just on Pronger to be our #1 guy. Having 1, #1 guy on defense has never worked out for us. Carle/Coburn/Meszaros arent #1 guys. I think Carle or Coburn + Walker would be gone first.
There is a sense that Timonen isn’t a consistently big voice in the Flyers lockerroom. However, when he does have something to say, his teammates listen.
“He’s like that old E.F. Hutton commercial,” McCarthy said (“When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen”). “When Kimmo talks, people stop what they’re doing and listen. He commands a lot of respect in that dressing room.”
I don't see the Flyers dealing Kimmo. The reasons some people are leery of him are the same reasons other teams would be leery of moving assets for him. He has more value to us than in a trade, and if he can still contribute (which I think he can), he has a place on this team. The cap hit is worrisome, but that was the risk we ran when we signed him to that deal.

what are you honestly going to get for a 7th defenseman making 1.7 million and has a busted hip and a idiot goon making over 1 million on a 3 year deal.(Thanks Holmgren!) That my friend is waiver fodder. too bad Holmgren would never do it.
Leighton also just signed a deal and wont be traded. if Bobs keeps playing the way he has he has to stay up i would think(remember this is Holmgren here) I would trade Boucher for a low draft pick once Leighton gets back.
The rest I agree with you.

Hey, if the team wants to really rely on 1 #1, and watch as Carle/Coburn and Meszaros (again) try take over Kimo's work so be it. It will be funny to watch.
Trade/let him walk Carbomb.
Waive/Trade Walker :faceplam:
Keep Shelley as the HW.
Timmo should and more than likely will retire a flyer in couple of years would be my guess.
Sign Raffi Torres OR Curits Glencross OR Patrick Eaves (guys with more Offensive upsdie) in the offseaon - to replace Carbomb
Depending on this year we might want to hold on to Z.
I think so as well. Anything above 7 is when my eyebrows start to seriously go up, but there aren't that many 40-40 guys around in the league who are also great defensively.
Carter
29-24-53 (+6) +24
46-38-84 (+23) +47
33-28-61 (+2) +24
In the best season of his career, Briere scored 95 points and his numbers would be (+17) +47.
In short... Briere can score more, it don't mean he'll be better than Carter as far as what the scores look like on the scoreboard at the end of the game. Ya know, the most important thing for the team.
