Pretty much. I could be wrong but I seem to remember the Kings having plenty of open seats in the house five years ago.

Ya, not to rag on you Johnrazor, but your post here seems kinda "newfound elitist." You come here pointing out our bad attendance and saying "I thought Dallas wasn't like Phoenix" when YOUR team just last year came out of the basement of the NHL for the past decade, where you fans didn't show up all the time either. Convenient memory lapse there.

US hockey fans don't show up for losing products. Especially in the South. That's just a fact.

Our seats were never as empty as your seats were tonight. The kings have a abnormally large fan base especially considering the fact that they are in socal. Its evident just by looking on these boards and seeing the amount of posts associated with the kings. Only the canadian teams and three or four us teams have more posts. Anyways, I was just surprised to see so many empty seats. I came in peace. I honestly think you have a great fun team to watch and like i said i was just surprised. I am not trying to talk crap about your attendance

Maybe it's just me, but the past two games they've just seemingly continued to try and do the fancy go through a player on their own moves A LOT. It's like a form of Guerin's toe drag but worse, and all of them are doing it (Ribs/Benn*especially Benn*/Richards/Neal/Wandell)

It's a coaching gaffe, but it's not what you think it is. The failure comes from not placing a guy in the box. You cannot send a fifth guy over the boards at the expiration of a major penalty - he has to come out of the box, or you wait until the next stoppage of play.

Quote:
20.3 Substitution When a player has been assessed a major penalty and has been removed from the game or is injured, the offending team does not have to place a substitute player on the penalty bench immediately, but must do so at a stoppage of play prior to the expiration of the major penalty. He may then legally exit the penalty bench when the major penalty has expired. If the player has been assessed minor penalties in addition to the major penalty that must also be served on the penalty time clock, the offending team must place a substitute on the penalty bench immediately.

Failure to place a player on the penalty bench prior to the expiration of the major penalty will result in that team having to continue to playing one player short (but not officially considered short-handed) until the next stoppage of play. Any replacement player who enters the game other than from the penalty bench shall constitute an illegal substitution under Rule 68 Illegal Substitution calling for a bench minor penalty.

Furthermore, if the team fails to place a player on the penalty bench to return to the ice at the end of the major penalty, they continued to play short-handed but are not permitted to ice the puck as they are no longer short-handed by reason of a penalty.

Ah, I interpreted your first sentence as "they should have sent someone over the boards when it expired." My bad.

Don't mind us if we get kind of defensive. Stars fans as a breed almost have to be here in Dallas. There are still a lot of people who don't know the sport very well or who simply don't care.

That being said, I would like to point out a few things regarding the attendance of our respective fanbases:

Year: (Rank by average), Total Attendance, Average Attendance, % of Capacity

2009-10: (16) Kings 709,853 17,313 ... 93.6
2009-10: (17) Stars 705,817 17,215 ... 92.9

2008-09: (14) Stars 724,911 17,680 ... 95.4
2008-09: (22) Kings 676,042 16,488 ... 89.1

2007-08: (12) Stars 739,585 18,038 ... 97.3
2007-08: (21) Kings 680,877 16,606 ... 92.0

2006-07: (12) Stars 734,508 17,914 ... 96.7
2006-07: (16) Kings 691,229 16,859 ... 91.1

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Stars definitely aren't doing very well a handful of games into this season. At this point in the season though, it's kind of hard to judge how the attendance will end up at the end of the season. The Stars and Kings fanbases have been fairly even in a number of categories over the years, but clearly when either team's on ice product hasn't been very good that team's attendance numbers have dropped.

And I certainly wouldn't read much of anything into number of posts or posters on a hockey forum. That discrepancy may say more about the demographic of a respective fanbase than anything about overall numbers or acuity of interest.

re: kings v. stars attendance

it should be noted that staples center's premiere level (middle part of the arena where corporate bigwigs buy seats to entertain clients and the like) is the traditionally empty area for regular season games... while the lower bowl and upper deck remain fairly dense with traditionally passionate fans.

maybe these corporate tickets are in the lower bowl at the aac? i don't recall seeing much besides the sparse lower bowl on tv.

certainly, empty seats in the lower bowl vs a higher part of the arena make for emptier appearances on tv.

Not entirely, but pretty much. There are definitely some diehard Stars fans who shell out the cash for lower bowl season tickets, but by and large the crowd in the lower bowl is a bit of a different breed from the upper bowlers.
