Zherdev Demoted (update: healthy scratch for October 29)

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...th_Flyers.html

Quote:
Flyers RW Nik Zherdev found himself on the fourth line at Thursday's practice as he switched spots with Andreas Nodl.

Coach Peter Laviolette downplayed the move, saying it had more to do with Nodl's strong play lately.

That said, the Flyers have not been happy with Zherdev's defensive lapses. Offensively, he has just two goals and no assists in nine games.

The Flyers play in Pittsburgh Friday, and if Laviolette uses the lines he had at practice, Zherdev will be with Blair Betts and Jody Shelley, while Nodl wil be with Mike Richards and the goal-less James van Riemsdyk.
Seems that despite his improved play last game, Lavy is still picking on this kid.

Odd timing, given that the Buffalo game was probably his strongest with the team.

I don't care how ****** he is playing, he's going to be a liability on the 4th line.

Flyers and their Russians at it again.

If Ovechkin was on the team, he would be a healthy scratch as our 13th forward.

maybe Zherdev and Filatov should start a support group.

Zherdev doesn't seem to do too well with the type of coach Laviolette is. Just like Tortellini.

This doesn't make sense. Not only are they punishing him after one of his better game so far, but they're ****ing up our fourth line by putting him there. That's not good in any way at all. If you want to teach him a lesson then make him a healthy scratch, don't weigh the team down and insult Zherdev by putting him on the fourth line.

Can you imagine both Shelley and Zherdev playing on the fourth line? Gawd.

Filatov + Zherdev + Kovalchuk + Kabanov

They could start their own union.

Zherdev doesn't seem like he could play on a 4th line.

That is an asinine move. Maybe Laviolette has a strategy and is basically gonna force him to play defense or let him sit in the press box.

maybe it is odd timing but the guy hasnt done **** since he got here. floating around, lazy on both ends of the ice. This has nothing todo with him being russian. He hasnt earned the time to be on a scoring line.

I expect we'll see Zherdev with a hattie against the Pens; Shelley in on all three goals.

Woo!

I question this move solely because it weakens our top 9. No offence to Powe and Nodl but they are not nearly as skilled as Zherdev. Dispute his lack of effort, if he gets the puck in the offence zone he makes things happen, or at the very least can keep a play going effectively. His defence hasn't been horrid but it hasn't been nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. I'm thinking it will take till about the 1st period for Lavy to realize he needs to play Zherdev with the top 9, and give him PP time(where he is most effective).

Wow...I am rather confused about this move as the rest of you seem to be....

He comes off a good game and then is demoted? Something happen during practice?

People see this as weakening our top-9. Maybe the plan is to strengthen our 4th and have them score a ton?

I like that strategy lets stack the 4th line, richards, carter, and Giroux. No one will ever beat us.

This is a dumb move. Are we sure Stevens didnt get plastic surgery and really is Lavi? Just like Briere you knew Zherdev didnt play any D, so why harp on his defensive issues. Maybe if they kept the guy on the same line for more than 1 game he might find some consistency. Might as well play Carcillo as it is total waste to have him on the 4th line. Surprised they dont take the easy way out and scratch him. Amazing they dont do this with Carter when sleepwalks through games. No balls from the organization while in contract talks, they might hurt someones feelings. The russian hate continues Just a plain stupid move.

People are reading way too much into this. Zherdev will make an end to end rush tonight, beat 4 defenders and slide the puck past the keeper, and be on the first line within 5 minutes of the first period.
