Which is the precise reason to not extend anyone now. Let the players earn it.

While there is some logic to this, you run real risk there. Look no further than what happened to Buffalo. They got killed by an offer sheet, and lost both Drury and Briere (who could have been signed to a quite reasonable deal by all accounts if they had jumped on it earlier).

I'm getting really sick of the mindless Carter critics. Nobody talks about the beautiful pass he made through a defender's feet and right onto Giroux's stick to spring him on the Powe goal, or the deft touch/deflection pass to Briere on his goal....

He goes to the net, he gets tips and sets screens, he's been hitting more and creating turnovers. Simply put he's probably our best all around forward, but, yeah, let's trade him right away. The mind boggles.
Ladies and Gentlmen, please stand as we have the king of the Jeff Carter fan club in our midst. You are right Carter had his best game of the year so far, now doing it again.

If Philly gets priced out on an offer sheet for Carter.....bye, bye. What is the compensation on $6mill? Isn't it like four 1st rd picks?

Jeff Carter will not receive an offer sheet. He is arbitration eligible.

Giroux, on the other hand, could.

When someone has run out of points to make, they resort to character assassination.

You don't like Carter, we get it. *yawn*

Better than the king of the fantasy land where Carter is a serial rapist.

Carter has arbitration rights, so he can be protected from offer sheets anyway

Some of the best skits ever were the Connery skits. I won't even watch SNL anymore but I would watch those skits, funny stuff.

If Larry44, Jester, and I all agree on something, that either means that the world is ending or that we're probably right.

Ideally they can talk giroux into a 2 year deal for around 2.75 per. It rewards him fairly assuming he comes in around 50-60 points and then he gets his pay day in 2013 when Hartnell and Timonen come off the books.

Do you have any idea how many talentless hacks could be acquired by trading away first round picks?

That sounds like a plan. Not sure we do business that way.

Anyways, nothing new here. Homer has said many, many times that he's not trading Carter.

I have no doubt that both Carter and Giroux will be re-signed. They're both very good RFAs and RFAs usually don't have much leverage. I'm more concerned about how much Homer will overpay.
Lay off the Homer hate for 5 seconds. The last time he had to sign someone like this was Richards, and his contract is immense.

As much as I'm critical of Carter's soft play, it is hard to let go of that offense.

Guys I would get rid of to keep Carter:

Carle
Hartnell
Shelley
Boucher
ODonnnell

I'd drop any just to give Carter a raise.

The Flyers have guys that are more expendable to lose than to lose Carter.

They need to get a deal done.

Being legitimately concerned about our lackluster GM, who happens to be horrible at cap management and mediocre at contract agreements, signing our two most important RFAs is "homer hate".

You go on and think that.

Oh come on! Have a look around. I don't mind constructive and well-thought criticisms of the guy, but it's in every post in every thread all over the board. It's boring. He's made some mistakes (Gagne, Shelley), but he's made some steals (Coburn, Leino, Richards) and since he's taken charge we've gone from bottom overall to making the conference finals and the Stanley finals.

As i say, he's made mistakes but with the vitriol he receives everywhere here, you'd think he was Garth Snow.

I wouldn't really call that contract a "steal."

I think in a few years if the cap continues to rise as it has been you will do.

Well, but cap figures have gone down across the league at the same time... so escalation of individual players' contracts is flattening. However, at the same time, Holmgren gave a guy in the middle of his third season coming off of two rough years a 12 year contract with 60+M in guaranteed money. That's not really a "steal," that's a handsome price to lock a dude up.

That's one way of looking at it, the other is that Holmgren looked at him, saw how great a player he'd be and saw that he's the long-term captain of this franchise and made a good gamble to lock him up to a good price for an excellent term. How can you not like this contract? He is the Flyers.

I have no problems with that contract... for the very reasons you cite. However, that doesn't make it a "steal." It was almost certainly overpayment for what Richards had accomplished to that point in his career, and represents a significantly risky contract if Richards were to suffer a serious injury that hindered his ability to perform at the level he has to this point.
