Schenn and Kaberle are 2 bright lights on this below par team. They have looked great! The funny thing is Burke will trade them before any of the other old overpaid garbage he has on defense.

I really hope Burke sees the value of Schenn and Kaberle and keeps them! It would be a huge loss to lose either of them. They are by far the 2 best D Toronto has.

Schenn will get a short-term, low-caphit contract after this season. When that's up he will go for the longterm big money contract.

Both players are playing for new contracts so this last year stats will be inflated.

For Kaberle, Id go 4.75m for 4 years somewhat frontloaded with a full length NTC.
Can't have a NMC until you reach UFA age. I see him at $2.5-$3 million right now, but that can change quickly.

Schenn's best full year so far was actually his rookie season, and that was coming into the NHL straight from junior. Staal completed his junior eligibility before entering the NHL, 2 years after his draft year.

Myers at this point doesn't factor into the equation, as he's also on an ELC.

Wow, I learned this from this post. 4 million for Giordano? Wow. The guy is max a 3-3.5 million dollar guy, although to be fair he was going to be UFA next year. He's not really a comparable player to Schenn though. He's more of an average-sized, speedy puck-carrier with an offensive game; kind of like what Blacker projects to be actually. Somebody should definitely be moving now that this contract has been signed. Sarich? Although maybe not, as Staios is UFA next year.

Actually Schenns best year was last year, not his rookie one. Schenn should get a 5 year 15-20M Contract. Kabs at most should get a 3 year, $15M contract.

You're looking at the stats, not his actual play. You and me both know he didn't play as well as he did the year before.

Ya Schenn was a real standout his rookie year; hitting, fighting, shutting down the best players in the game at 18 years.

Sophomore he starts out slow until the second-half/last-third, and that's when we start to see the first signs of an offensive game developing, but he was never lights out last season as he was in his rookie year, when he was raw, but just punishingly effective, and all year - no slow start, etc..

This year he just looks like a real complete defenseman, doing everything well consistently. He's not particularly as standout as his rookie year, but he is playing even better in that he's just playing a real efficient, all-around game, sufficiently adjusted to the pace of the NHL so that it looks like he's doing more by doing less.

Offensive game is still developing. I'd like to see him become a mainstay on the powerplay with his ability to get the puck through to the net.

Both these guys play relatively important roles with their teams; Staal more so of course, as he's more a no. 1/2 for New York. Hjalmarsson is more of a strict no. 4, and his contract was inflated by the offer sheet from San Jose. Anyways, both are relatively similar players, at a similar age and importance to their team.

Schenn is pretty much already a steady no. 2 defenseman for us, but he isn't as pivotal to us as Staal is to New York, where he's essentially the pillar of their defense. Schenn's got Phaneuf and Kaberle starring in front of him, and an alternative shutdown man in Komisarek along.

Similar players with different roles and progression into their careers may be.

Seabrook - 3.5 million

B. Coburn - 3.2 million

M.E. Vlasic - 3.1 million

I'm thinking he should start at 3 million, just taking into account apparent value for a type of player he is, and then the idea of just handing him straight up what he only makes as potential now, which of course is 3 million, including all potential bonuses.

Range. The guy should get between 3 and 3.5. Hjalmarsson's value was inflated by San Jose's offer sheet, again - but there are similar guys like Seabrook who are further in progression into their careers making the same, and with relatively the same prominence of role on the team as no. 2. He'll never reach Staal's 4 million. The guy just has way more of a prominent role in NY.

I'm thinking, again, 3 million - but as a compromise to similar players who may be further into their careers or have had their numbers inflated by offers, we could do a compromise, of 3.25.

Sound about right to you guys?

Of course, this assuming that he continues his current form throughout the year.

Next up; Kaberle.

Roszival @ 5 million; Gonchar @ 5.5; Visnovsky @ 5.6; Markov @ 5.75; Rafalski @ 6; Boyle @ 6.7. Each are similar players at a similar level, age and responisbility within their organization. I'm thinking Kaberle starts at 5.5, but doesn't go over 6. Factors such as retirement length and 'hometown' discount may be relevant.

How bout' it.
i can see schenn at 3.5 @ 4 years
Kaberle at 4.25 (NTC) @ 3 years. something along those lines i could see. Kaberle takes discount cause of Leafs and NTC.

Burke could resign Kaberle right now if he wanted to, nothing stopping him.

However every time Burke is asked the question of Kaberle potentially leaving at seasons end, and Leafs getting nothing in return, Burke always defends that outcome by mentioning the $4 mil Cap space recaptured.

This to me, at this point doesn't bode well for a resigning.. Hopefully Kaberle can continue to play well and contribute offensively and it does convince Burke/Wilson to keep him..

As a UFA Kabs could expect to get $5-6 mil on the open Market, and would be in strong demand from many Teams. IMO

Actually he said many times through the summer that signing him to an extension was a possibility.

And they recently said that they agreed to take some time off during the beginning of the season instead of talking contract right away. I'm certain it'll come up again later in the year.

Lock up Schenn for 15 years!!!!

Hopefully we can sign him for under 3 million, but I doubt the way he has been playing.

Kaberle's contract depends on a lot of things.

Losing Kaberle for nothing would be a huge loss. Burke demonstrated as much in not trading him for anything but something significant. Kaberle and Burke have both mentioned their importance and desire to stay here.

The possible 4 million in cap won't serve us for much if we're not a lock to sign a guy like Richards or Backes. Lebda could take a more prominent role next year, something he was looking for even, and Blacker turns pro next year, but likely won't be ready - and both those options are huge downgrades from Kaberle. Improving our offense with a legitimate guy like Richards, while losing on defense might be a worthwhile option though.

What is it?

Legitimate no. 1 center? Lebda more prominent role? Blacker steps in to an extent?

or.

Top NHL puckmover?

I think it could work out.

Phaneuf - Schenn .Compliment each other and have demonstrated chemistry.
Lebda - Komisarek .Also compliment each other and have demonstrated chemistry.
Beauchemin-Gunnarsson/Holzer .Two-way guys, play together or with anybody. Blacker has also demonstrated NHL ability but only just. Likely needs more development.

It may come down to Richards or Kaberle, although Burke likely won't risk trying to deal Kaberle at the deadline, to Richards just re-signing with Dallas or going to another team later. It could be possible though that he may have a little more time if Dallas doesn't make the playoffs, allowing time for negotiation with Richards and then, if something is worked out, we could plan to get something out of Kaberle during the draft or something.
