True, I'm guessing he gets 2 games

Guess this means Zherdev will be back in the line-up...

His hands aren't weapons, he's a shrimp. Using his stick was the only way to get his point across. Unfortunately, that's where the possibility of suspensions comes in of course.

You're right, I misread that. I don't think he'll get extra time because he's a Flyer, but he could if they remember those past stick infractions and consider this a repeat offense.

Briere cross-checked Nielsen, sparking a melee that earned himself and Dan Carcillo ejections from the game, as well as several players receiving penalties on both sides.

Hence, Briere will have a 10 a.m. conference call on Monday with the National Hockey League.

After the Neilsen bit, Briere went behind the net and got tangled up with irate Isles, not to mention goalie Rick DiPietro, who initially wanted to fight him, then decided to try for Carcillo. Nothing came of that, other than penalties all around.

“He was mad because we were two on [Trevor] Gillies in front of the net a few face-offs before,” Briere said of the altercation with DiPietro. “All I was trying to do was hold his arm because he was trying to hit [Braydon] Coburn.

“We didn’t want anybody fighting Gillies, we wanted him to leave him on the ice. All I was trying to do was hold his arm to protect Coburn a little bit and Nielsen called me a few expletive words and didn’t appreciate what I was doing.

“In the face-off before he did the same thing to me. He came over with his stick, had me in a head lock, so I didn’t know what he was doing, I just wanted to keep my hands high and try to protect myself.”

The league likes to go after the repeat offenders.

I've already stated that if I was in charge of this, I would hand Danny Boy 3 games. 2 seem appropriate plus one extra as a repeat offender. That being said, as a fan I of course hope its less so he can play more games for us and with how the league handles suspensions it is really hard to tell what he will get.

I thought what he and Carcillo did was a very poor display of sportsmanship but a suspension of more than one game seems harsh, even with the prior from last year against the Avs.

The lack of sportsmanship started when Konopka instigated a fight in the third period when the game was decided, when Gillies started acting like a ***** trying to fight everyone in a scrum and pushing Briere over, and when Nielsen got in Briere's face right before the faceoff. Not to mention the goalie trying to fight everyone. All of that was unnecessary and quite *****-like.

Briere got his stick up to retaliate because, well, that's Briere. He'll get suspended for it. Carcillo came in to stand up for his teammate who was being physically and verbally by a team acting like dicknoses because they were losing.

The Flyers were trying to play this game out. The Isles acted like sore losers. Who lacks sportsmanship here?

Ok I'll be up front and say it:

Briere is looking at a suspension for this play.

However, there are a few things that bug me:

1. Neilson obviously got him riled there before the faceoff.
2. Things look WAY worse than they actually are in slow motion. I thought Nielson embellished to draw it.

It looked like to me that Neilson wanted that to happen. They were down 6-1 and probably were looking for something to take away as a victory. Seems like their silver lining is Briere gone for 3 games?

It can go either way.

Briere was being reckless with his stick, but it wasn't like last year where he ran up late and jumped to cross check Hannan in the face. This was being overly aggressive with his stick and getting Nielsen across the back of the head.

He might be able to talk himself out of a suspension, or whittle it down to a 1 game. On the other hand he can be seen as a repeat offender, and get a 4 game suspension, because he hasn't learned his lesson from last year.

I think he will get 3 games, past history plus being a flyer.

With Colin Campbell, it's always a crapshoot to predict these types of things.

That's why it would be totally worth it to start a pool for some vBucks.

My guess is 3 games. He got suspended for 2 for that cross check on Hannan last year, so I'm sure the league will look at this and say it's not the first time, so he gets das Boot.

Ouch.
I think he meant that the Flyers wanted Gillies to leave Coburn alone on the ice, not for someone to leave Gillies decked. I remember Coburn holding his face, curled up in front of the net after Gillies did whatever it was he did that got him the triple minor.

I regarded his comment more as "Gillies blows, so we benefit more when he gets to actually take a shift."

There's an extra "him" in there for that interpretation.

What's going to get Briere is the fact that they were jawing before the faceoff and then he promptly whacked him right off the draw (with Carcillo coming in for good measure). I mean, it was pretty clear to me it was intentional...

I'd be shocked if it was that much... seems extreme.

Anyone who thinks he isn't getting suspended is nuts. I'm as big a fan of olde tyme hockey and the rough stuff as you will find, and this is definitely suspension worthy. Imagine if someone on the Penguins did this to someone on the Flyers...you know everyone would be calling for absurd suspensions.
