He's not going to sign a 5 year 20 million dollar deal. It would be idiotic
Sorry but, How is that idiotic? We lock up our most talented young player long term for a reasonable cap hit of. If Holmgren pulls a deal like this i'd be pretty happy. Not to mention he would be in the last year of being RFA eligible once that contract expires.
Not sure whether you meant for the team or him though...

Ah, no he wouldn't, he'd be an UFA.
In reality, that contract is *ing terrible for the Flyers. It's probably more than he should get as of right now, and doesn't give us a RFA year to actually lock him up through his prime.
*ing fantastic deal from Giroux perspective.
If he's getting 4 per, we're looking at a 3 year deal.

I think he probably meant for him. But thats w/o looking at the UFA and RFA years (idk when they end)
I would offer him a 2 years 7M deal or lock him up with a long term deal.

We basically want to lock Roo up cheap for the next 2 years, that way, when Briere comes off the books, we can use that money (though hopefully not all of it) to look Roo up long term.

?
Briere is under contract for 4 more years after this one.
ah, my bad forgot he's 22, not 21. Still I don't see him getting much less than a contract that averages out to a 4m cap hit. especially if he continues on the pace he has been.

Which he has yet to prove he can do at the NHL level. $4M is a lot of coin for a guy with 31 career goals in the NHL.
Jester I think you are under estimating what it should cost to lock giroux up for a long term like that. When I have more time I'll pull up some comparables

3 years isn't "long term."
And David Perron signed a 2 year 4.3M contract this past offseason (coming off 27, 50, and 47 pt seasons).

I was talking about the original 5 year deal proposed.
Perron was a guybi was going to bring up. Giroux is a better player and on a shorter deal will easily get 4 million. If I'm giroux I'm not signing longer than 3 years unless we are talking 5 +

I'm not sure he'll "easily" double Perron's contract unless he puts up significantly better numbers this year and waits until the offseason.
4.0 for 5 years is a steal for a player of Giroux's caliber. Especially if he keeps up this play and the play in the playoffs like he did last playoffs.
Giroux may be an absolutely fantastic player, but he hasn't proven it over any sort of extended stretch yet. So, no, a 20M contract at this point is a long way off from a "steal." That's paying for what you expect and/or hope he may be.
