I agree with this ! I wish he would drive straight at the net and use his muscle inside more, one day its gonna click for him and might get his confidence going. He will figure it all out soon, i think he just needs a break out game to get him clicking.Confidence can do wonders for a young player that has the raw talent he has.He seems just a little tight to me, almost robotic at times. If he can just relax and loosen up a bit [ which confidence will do for him ] he should be fine.I am sure Lavy sees this as well.

You'd think putting him out there with Richie would generate more opportunities for him but...

I actually thought that line had a pretty strong game last night.

A couple of really strong forechecking shifts including one where Coburn got teed up for an open slapper from 25 feet or so and just couldn't bury it.

Plus, as plenty of others have mentioned, it does take longer for the big guys.

My main concern is that he doesn't look quite as fast as he did in preseason, can't tell if he's lost a little something or if the real games just are that much faster.

JVR will look pretty bad until he decides to have more confidence around the net. Its almost like he's afraid to make a play in front of the crease with the puck.

Really i haven't been impressed with JVR that much so far.

I sure hope his game gets right.

He drives wide too much when he carries the puck in the offensive zone. Always taking bad angled shots.

Another dreadful game for Van Riemsdyk. The first goal was entirely his fault. Now 0 goals in 12 games.

JVR needs to start attacking the net with the strength he displays along the boards, but with that said you need to stop focusing on goals. JVR has played well this season, even though the score sheet hasn't reflected his overall play.

i know the kid has a tremendous upside and he is a local boy which is cool but he just is not clicking. Poor angle shots, not using his size in between the circles, and what is up with his checking ability. I went to see a practice in the training camp and was so excited to see him this year. I thought he would be able to be physical and finish checks and drive to the net, guess not

Hopefully JVR turns it on soon...I really hope he does...maybe healthy scratch him for a few like they did with Zherdev? I mean that seem to work with him...actually maybe that isn't a good idea its not like he not trying..its just not working for him at the moment...its still early.

He's not driving the net at all, but he's finishing his checks, I'm not sure how you're missing that.

Why would you scratch JVR when the effort is there? That would send the wrong message.

by finishing checks you must mean love taps? a man at that size should be able to bury people at one point or another, he just bumps into people along the boards and uses his speed to move around without ever getting his big body to the net. I like him but he just isnt all there yet

The skill and effort are there, he just lacks the confidence. Hopefully he'll get going once he scores his first goal.

JvR would probably benefit from having his role well defined.

Since he is still learning, you tell him "James, these are the three things we need you to do every game..." and you build him up.

He is still developing, and seems to need to learn piecemeal. So be it.

As long as he can play in the top 6, we're good.

If the Flyers keep winning games, it should buy JVR some more time, but watching costly turnovers like that today makes me wish we won the draft lottery that year. He is only 21 and to be honest i would rather him stay here his entire career and never pan out than see him traded and thrive somewhere else. Watching Patrick Sharp play in Chicago just makes me sick.

I've gotten how the Flyers' board feels about forwards down to a science:

Player A is slumping. He sucks. Trade him.
Player A breaks out, and trade talk stops.
Player B starts slumping. He sucks. Trade him.
Player B breaks out, and trade talk stops.
Everyone starts slumping. This team sucks. Trade everyone.
We go on a winning streak. This team is the best in the NHL!
Player C starts slumping. He sucks. Trade him.
Player C breaks out, and trade talk stops.
Player D starts slumping. He sucks. Trade him.
Player D breaks out, and trade talk stops.

Player F starts slumping. He sucks. Trade him.
Player F breaks out, and trade talk stops.

Player G starts slumping. He sucks. Trade him.

I agree. Half way through my post I realized how that's a terrible idea.

I like your thinking, that does seem correct. I just hope JVR is in a slump and lacking confidence rather then not being ready to compete at a high level. I would never want to see him traded (another member just mentioned it) because of players like Patrick Sharp in Chicago, he has been such a playmaker and now he has sniper abilities. I hope JVR gets it going

there's been flags since the entry draft

about him.....the Flyers suggested major juniors, he went to college - twice

Does he really want to pay the "price", he hasn't so far and you have to think the Flyers are getting disappointed.....
JVR is costing himself alot of $.....maybe he just doesn't "want it"
A 2nd overall pick with that size and more importantly, SPEED, has to give/produce more.

I think last year the Flyers should have handle JVR the same way they did Giroux. They should have sent him to the Phantoms for half the season or maybe even the full season.
JVR came from US College, no disrespect to that hockey but they only play about 30 games and only on weekends I think. Jumping from College to NHL is a bigger step than the Canadian Junior League to NHL. in the CHL they play 60 games + playoffs (nfl format)

I think they should send him down right now, get him lots of playing time get his confidence back up, scoring lots of goals, work on his game and call him back around Christmas. I think that would be the best for his development as a player.

Hes 21, so how about we stop freaking out 12 games into his sophomore season.

JVR is in a slump, yes, but the effort is there and he has come in this season both faster and stronger. As a young power forward, I expect JVR to have a good season NEXT YEAR while defining his role this season.

If you want JVR to get big numbers, he needs PP time. Other then that, the stats won't tell the whole story if he is getting only ES time every game.
