This is the mask Martin Biron, the Rangers' current backup goalie, had delivered to him last week. He hopes to wear it in a game soon. It is a tribute to the 1977 Gratton mask.
"When I signed here this summer, I was doing research, thinking of what to do going back in the history of the Rangers," said Biron, reflecting the deep consideration many goalies give to their mask decorations. He had his main mask painted up in stars and stripes to commemorate the Rangers as well as his first pro job with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. But he needed a second mask.
"I talked to the painter, and he asked for the green light to do something special," Biron said. "He told me what he was thinking, which I thought would be great. It just came out unbelievable."
The painter Biron worked with was Steve Nash, who owns Eyecandyair, a firm in the Toronto area that paints goalie masks.
"Both Marty and Gratton are Leos, and they're both from Quebec, so I thought we'd try this," said Nash, who has painted masks for several N.H.L. goalies. "Gratton’s original was painted by Greg Harrison, who was one of the first guys to paint masks. I really admire him."
