One of the very best, and I still think of him with the Reds before I ever think of the Tigers, for some unknown reason.

RIP Sparky - the game lost a good one today.
Definitely RIP Sparky. He is the indirect reason that I'm a Flyers fan. My grandfather (my hero!) was a huge baseball fan and he followed the Cincinati Reds but he also watched other sports. Since we're in Delaware, we watched Philadelphia teams so we watched the Flyers, Eagles and Sixers. Hockey was Pop-Pop's least favorite sport but I loved it from the start and I've been a Flyers fan since I was about 4 years old.

Dan Carcillo was suspended twice last season – four games for cold-cocking Washington’s Matt Bradley, and two games for high-sticking New Jersey’s David Clarkson.

So don’t be surprised if the Flyers’ ornery winger gets called on the carpet again, this time for elbowing Rangers forward Ruslan Fedotenko early in the third period of Thursday’s 4-1 win in Philadelphia, especially since Rangers coach John Tortorella called him out in his post-game press conference.

“Do I have a problem with it? Sure, why wouldn’t I?” Tortorella said. “We get these (head shot) tapes sent to us during the summer and at the beginning of the year. Why send them? It’s a waste.”

Replays indicate Carcillo got his elbow up on Fedotenko, who was falling to the ice when contact was made.

“I saw him in the middle of the ice and the puck was there,” Carcillo said. “He kind of went down right when I got to him. My elbows were in. I know it looks bad, but I didn’t try to hit his head or anything.

“I don’t think anything (Tortorella) says is going to change anything. It is what it is. It’s not like I took strides toward him. I know they’re cracking down on that, so I imagine I’ll get a phone call.”

“It’s very pleasant to hear that.” Russian goalie Sergei Bobrovsky on fans chanting his nickname, “Bob.”

Good: All around team play, good effort, strong team D, PP, Bob, Giroux (esp. one pass that led to a Richards' goal), Betts, Carter on faceoffs
Bad: Nothing really, JVR perhaps.
Ugly: See above post.

JVR spends too much time around the perimeter. It just isn't working for him. sophomore slump?

also...."pleasant." hahaha. i imagine Bob listening to recordings of people chanting his name to relax before games, or in the bath.

Therien has mentioned more than a couple of times in recent days "He isn't moving his feet." Strange since in the preseason camp, there was much delight in both his physical improvement but also the overall development of his game.

Tim P. has a correction:

My bad. Misunderstood Fedotenko. The official - not Carcillo - told Feds "don't duck" on future hits.

Does anyone else think we've been getting the better end of calls in some recent games?

guys, I'm having an MSE moment here:

4/11: Flyers clinch playoff spot and begin their Finals run in a shootout
11/4: well, this, I guess.

I just looked at the standings, and I know its early and we have played a few more games than most teams, but we currently have an eastern conference best 17 points. Only LA with 18 has more.

definitely, especially during this streak. it's about time these things go our way. but i really think the flyers have done their best to minimize the lazy stick-related penalties that were haunting them during the beginning of the year. that carter hook at the end of the first made me furious. that said, lately i feel most of the penalties called against us are deserved, and we've been handed a few gifts.

I've heard 3 different descriptions of Zherdev's goal on TSN this morning. All of them start with "The puck climbs up Lundqvist's pad/stick..." and the rest was
* ...like it has little legs.
* ...like a mountain climber.
* ...like that game on The Price is Right.

Oh yeah, and just as I called it, the Giroux pass is the TSN highlight of the night.

I only watched the hit from Carcillo on my iPhone, but to me it didn't looked like a blind site hit.

Honestly, I think that, for this game, the defense really helped him out. He came out too far to challenge shooters on a few occasions and he had some really bad rebounds towards the end of the game (one of which led to a goal against). He's been terrific this year though.

Great game all-around. Gonna have to be patient with JVR even if he is disappointing so far. I think Bob could have played better, but he still played decent, posted good stats, and won so w/e.

I have no problem with the Carcillo hit. Don't think there was any intention to hit the head and it's never a hit to the head if Fedotenko isn't on his knees when the hit is delivered. There was no call on the ice too so I'd be shocked if he got suspended or even fined for it.
