They're keeping Winny over Smith

Smith is on a 2-way deal.

Ottawa is very close to the cap.

Winchester isn't playing poorly so why sit him?

Winny has to clear waivers, Smith doesn't. That's more than likely why.

Winchester is also better than Smith at being an NHL player. The guy is in much better positions on the ice. Sure Smith may have more offensive potential, but they are both playing on the 4th line anyways.

Also, Winchester is way better at faceoffs.

This. Smith will be back, and I have no doubts he'll have a better NHL career in the long run. But right now, playing on the 4th line winnie looks much more comfortable imo.

Winchester could save himself from a lot of criticism by playing more physical. He's shown the ability to lay some monster hits in the past and for many casual fans having him smash someone in the boards will take him from the "I did not notice him, he has no goals, he's useless" column to the "this guy's got heart/leadership/grit" column.

Also, other than possibly a little more offensive upside, the only thing Smith brings that Winchester does not is additional physical play / fights. If Winchester shows he is willing to do that... it makes management's decision between the two that much easier.

Big time. Winny can't shoot the puck so he has to find other ways to make himself noticeable to people who are barely watching him. I think they've cut down on his hitting to make sure he remains a reliable center....Winchester's fine he's just nothing special...which he isn't supposed to be.

Man, when was the last time we had a completely healthy set of forwards (knock on wood)?

I still think we haven't seen the best of Michalek. In San Jose, I remember watching some late games in the playoffs and watching how dangerous he was. I do believe some Flames players after the series had said that HE was the guy they were most concerned with in terms of dangerous Sharks forwards. Not to reflect back too much, but considering how Michalek has shown up in his short playoff career, and Kovalev's history of playoff performances, you can't help but wonder how Pittsburgh would have handled having those two in our lineup, healthy and playing well....

Here's hoping we finally get some health and allow the real Sens to gel and start streaking as the season goes. I really like our forward group when it's healthy.
