Unless one last shot meant 'club'... I'm thinking that a well situated team going into 2011-12 and health could make him sign up for another.

That is of course if the Flyers don't win it all this season.

Now if only we could shed Shelley, Walker, and Leighton and we SHOULD have enough money to bring back everyone we want to (read: Carter and Leino).

Shelley (1.10)
Walker (1.70)
Leighton (1.55)

4.35m on nothing. There's Leino's contract and then some.

Unless Lappy comes back Shelly isn't going anywhere, and even then...

Have to say, this deal has the potential to be an absolute steal.

I'm not throwing a party just yet, but it's potentially a very nice deal for the Flyers.

It's slightly similar to the Richards deal (as far as around when/why they handed it out based on performance), so hopefully this one will work out just as well.

you still need to at least 2 of them with roster players, so you wont have all that to spend

Would have liked to have seen a longer deal-say 7 years, but great signing. Hopefully he resigns long-term in about 3 years from now. Excellent talent, and great signing.

Heh, I just realized that Briere will still have a year left on his deal when Roo's expires.

I like Danny and am one of the few on here who's defended him since 07-08, but man, that deal is a cap-killer.

Most importantly? He's still an RFA when it expires.

I like 3 year deals personally when it comes to a cap league.....Carter needs the same if we're going to sign him. Interesting G was signed before Carter.

I'm sure you weren't saying that last playoffs but yes it's not an ideal contract but so far he's earning it since the playoffs. He just needs to stop with the dumb stick infractions....

Briere should be tradable by then his cap hit is 6.5mil but his salary is 2mil a team on a shoestring budget would probably take on the remain of his contract just to reach the cap floor (Atlanta,NYI,etc....)

Love the fact that Giroux is still an RFA after this extension is over, gives the Flyers some leverage/options.

Not really when you think about it. Carter is gonna garner a much higher salary and thus a greater compensation if he gets offer sheeted thus he is the less likely player to be in danger of being poached by another team if he makes it to July.

This is great.

It looks like the dead weight falling off will make room to at least get Carter signed plus (insert who deserves to stay).

I doubt that a 37 year-old Briere is going to waive his NMC to go to some basement team.

A team on a budget isn't necessarily a basement team.

Nashville, Colorado and Phoenix made the playoffs even well below the cap.

I feel that teams expecting to trade players like Briere are going to find it very difficult and not the cake walk that it looks like on paper. Just look at Kaberle in Toronto. He just didn't want to leave. Players have lives and families and sign longterm NMC contracts for the exact type of security that people think they'll give up so very easily.

There is a difference when you are in your last year of a contract. If all the signs are pointing that the team is going to move forward without you, then why not start looking for a new place?
