If the Redline is eliminated what would you guys think of...

sutter putting in a system like the torpedo offense that the Swedes used in the 2002 olympics.

http://www.leaguelineup.com/czechhoc...es/torpedo.htm

Now the key to the torpedo is having extremly aggresive forechecking which was (imo) a strength of calgary during their run to the finals with guys like nieminen, nilson, donovon, kobasew. Another key is having top end skill players to play the halfback position and control play.

Here is how the roster would look

Torpedos
Kobasew-Donovon
Lombardi-Nilson
Nieminen-*Fisher
Clark-Weimer

**Simon:

*Aquired Through Trade
**Would seldom be used as a torpedo due to his lack of speed. Would be used more as a powerplay specialist and as a fill in torpedo

Halfbacks
Leopold-Iginla
Langkow-Lydman
Reinprecht-Ference

Libero
Regehr
Warrener
Phaneuf

Now I know everyone is going to say that it doesn't work on the NA ice surface and that Calgary isn't talented enough to employ such a system but when I started reading about the torpedo system I couldn't help but see the similarities in the hard forechecking game (minus the dump and chase) that Calgary played last playoffs.

Anyways, discuss!

a very interesting idea, but i think if you used this system you'd have to have iginla up as a torpedo. he's the best scorer on the team, not a playmaker.

Why isn't Iginla on a torpedo unit? How many breakaways did Iginla have last season? Atleast a dozen. His speed is truly underrated.

We have the speed to play this sytem, but we lack the playmakers or halfbacks on our team, we are better suited in the 2 man forecheck.

This is that Torpedo system that led Swedes to a loss to Belarus. After some years, Nillson gave up on this system. He said, that in national team players don't have time to learn all the tactics and elements of the system. He said, that he is convinced to keep playing Torpedo in his club though. It was about 2 years ago and I have no idea, how his club was doing with Torpedo. It should be noted, that whole this Torpedo thing is pretty much out-of-date now.

If you care, many russian experts say, that the key thing, that red line removal will change, is transitional game. Defensemen have to make much longer outlet passes and they don't have enough skill to do it. If red line will be removed, the first thing Flames should care about is training Dmen to make longer outlet passes.

I think the only thing taking out the red line does is move the wall of defenders from the red line to the blue line. It would just make the defensive side of hockey all the more visible which isn't a good way to sell the game as entertaining.

Didn't the Red Wings use the Torpedo last year when we played them?? Or was that Bowmans last year? Cant remember what year it was that thye went with that.

The Sharks had a system were they had 2 forecheckers who went to opposite sides of the net but they didn't have the 1 guy hanging back. Which was somewhat effective against our defense squad, especially Commodore.
