We signed Shelley because of Toronto and NYR. I honestly thought he was a much better fighter.

what about Shelley vs Walker? What player would you pick?
walker because you can never have too much depth on the blueline. just ask the 2004 Flyers

There really cannot be enough threads about how horrible shelley is. And that he hasn't been scratched or waived... is maddening.

I wouldn't be surprised if they started giving him PP time.

I am going to give him a little more time to get better... I mean its not as if I have any ****ing choice is it?

I saw him (Shelley) have a good shift against the Islanders on Saturday.

Maybe someday he will win a fight.

There's one and a half positives things I can find for Shelley.

Does anyone think Laviolette would send Shelley out on the PP to just set up in front of the net for the screen?

I honestly thought Lavy would be forced to play him more. I actually thought Shelley was going to get some time in the top 9 to attempt to be a power forward standing in front of the net. thank god he hasnt. the reason being is as dumb as Homer can be, no way he would have given out 1.1 million if he was only going to play 4 minutes.

It begs the question on the over/under for number of games where Shelley can be benched / sat / waived with Holmgren saving face.

I love all the people in here saying that heavyweights are needed. Last nyr game i saw, the boogey man was running around all game, and shelley was to scared to go and challenge him

You mean the game where he did fight Boogaard? And Boogaard didn't run around at all that game. There are plenty of reasons to pick on Shelley but don't just make things up.

not yet. but part of the things you look for in an enforcer are that he wont kill you 5on5 and doesnt kill penalties. which means in part that a fourth liner is poorly suited for the role yet thats traditionally where tough guys get playing time.

absolutely. you cant justify that contract unless hes giving you more than the 4 mins a game hes getting.having a big body is one thing you cant knock on shelly. also we dont have anyone else who is really suited to do that. its the flyers so we tend to think of them as big and tough but in reality we are a pretty small team up front

Actually, I do feel Boogaard ran around a bit. He even took a penalty doing so, didn't he? Regardless, you make your point because Shelley DID fight Boogaard.

the risk of having to fight is never going to stop someone like Boogaard or Orr from doing their thing.

He faught him in the first couple of minutes, then decided to let the boogy man run around for the rest of the game throwing his weight around. They were even out there together for a couple of shifts. One where boogard put a pretty nasty hit on mez along the boards

Trust me, I'm not condoning having Shelley on this team, but...

That's exactly why he's here. He fights Boogaard to basically say "I'm going to be here all night". Now Boogey knows, that if he does anything over the top, he will have a fight (not that he cares, but whatever). Boogey then skates around and takes some penalties. Shelley doesn't retaliate, as he shouldn't, because we will gladly take the PP and no one got hurt. Now, if Boogey was running around and cheapshotted, or hurt someone, you can bet Shelley would have been on him.

yeah, but that doesn't heal a player injured in a cheapshot.

Nothing does. The MOST that can be done, is dressing someone that the cheapshot artist must fight if it were to happen. That's all it's ever been.

This is what i find funny though. Is anyone actually scared of fighting shelley? I bet boogard was quivering in his boots when he saw shelley on the flyers bench.

Boogard: if i injure the most important player on the flyers, i will have to do what i actually get paid for. Oh noes!

This is why Lindros was amazing. There is nothing more demoralizing to the other team when an opponent's biggest offensive threat is also a bad ass mofo.
