Love the signing. Thought it wouldn't be under 6 mil but Holmgren really came through with the recent signings.

Would like to see breakdown, ie difference tween first few years and last few.

I think NHL wouldnt have a problem with something like 7 mil cap hit first few years, going down to 3 mil last few (for an average of 5 ish)..

They would balk at clearcut cap circumvention, ie 8 mil then 2 mil type deals, but a 4 mil variation is probably ok with them. Do u think?

The risk with the deal is if Carter suffers an injury that is bad enough to debilitate his play but not bad enough to retire. Even if he slowly declines after 6 years its doubtful that the cap hit will be heavy burden with inflation and a cap that will likely rise at least to some degree

I doubt they'll care much either way. 11 years at 37 y/o when the deal will be expiring.

How does this guy sign so many smart deals and then follow them up with moves that make you wonder whether or not he has some sort of learning disability?
I think you can even agree Homer didnt have a good summer.

The question is, will it also cover Leino's? That's what I'm saying though as well, even though I didn't mention it earlier. His pay might be about 2.5M to 3M and in that case, we might be in a bit of cap woes for the next season unless someone goes.

Ok I don't want to sound like an idiot, but the bonuses for both Bob and JVR DO count against the cap right?

Lets be clear... there's no particularly brilliant insight into offering to guarantee someone just shy of $60M over the next 11 years.

Holmgren has always been good at spending money.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong. But people were calling him out for the Mez signing. Lets see, so far this year.

The good
Mez trade.
Signing OD
re-signing Giroux
Stealing Carter
Leino(hopefully)

Not signing a free agent goaltender, argue all you want but bob has been nothing short of spectacular

The Bad
Shelley signing, 1.1 million isn't going to break the bank
Gagne trade( we don't know how much he was handcuffed by Gagne though)

Gotta remember... we will have a new CBA soon. Who knows how it will work then... or if it will come down some.

And the risk here is, of course, that he gets an injury that limits him (a la Ricky D).

When Eric Lindros was Carter's age right now... he was in his final season as a Flyer.

That contract could be such a steal in 5 years if the cap keeps going up.

Love the deal. I said on the other thread 5.75 and long term. Great deal for Carter. Hometown deal and locked up with his boy Richards. This deal will now allow the Flyers to keep Leino and get other deals done.

The style of game Lindros played would make me scared to sign him to a long term deal. Carter doesn't play with the same physical element. I'm more scared of Richard's not maintaining his play then I am Carter.

I'm a Holmgren hater and I'm still here. The cap hit on this deal is undeniably great. The rest of it, well...even if it's what makes the cap hit low...isn't. This type of contract is always a risk.

don't forget that he inexplicably signed leighton for too much before free agency, and then didnt really pursue any other goalies, which almost ****ed this team hard. it still could.

It's similar to the Pronger deal.

I think for the first 7 years, this is going to be an absolute steal.

26/27
27/28
28/29
29/30
30/31
31/32
32/33

You're essentially getting a guy who could be a 7 mill player in his prime for 2 mill less per year.

But then, you have the..

33/34
34/35
35/36
36/37

Also keep in mind that of the NHL's top-20 scorers last year, 2 (Marleau and Iginla) were over 30 and the oldest was 32.

I mean, the new NHL is a young man's game and most of Carter's game revolves around skating and shooting. We especially saw in the POs that a slow Carter isn't very useful, so we really have to bank that he keeps his speed into his 30s are this contract is going to be an albatross.

I think it's a decent deal, but the rush to annoint Homer for it is a bit much, it's a deal with a ton of risk, I'd say Carter and his agent got exactly what they wanted.

EDIT: I'll also be interested to hear about potential NMC/NTC clauses.
