PIT--BUF Blockbuster

To PIT

Vanek = 7.1
Pomminville = 5.3

Total = 12.4

To BUF

Staal = 4.0
Orpik = 3.75
Kunitz = 3.75
Dupuis = 1.4

Total = 12.9

PIT does it to give crosby a playmaker at wing (pommer) and to give malkin a terrific option to set up (vanek). plus letestu/talbot can pick up the slack for the loss of staal

tangradi-crosby-pommer
vanek-malkin-comrie

BUF does it because they may want the long term cap relief by getting those two big contracts off their books. Staal immediately replaces connolly when he hits UFA. Orpik would severely upgrade the sabres Defense and would look great next to myers. Kunitz comes in and can help make up for the production that is lost and if this experiment doesnt work out then he hits UFA after 2011. And Dupuis is a solid player with an expiring contract.

**And if the rumors about parise being unhappy in Jersey are true, then Buffalo will have some great cap room to make a pitch for him....maybe...just a thought**

Pittsburgh gets two wingers to help their franchise players

Buffalo gets long term cap relief, a young stud at center to replace connolly, a rock at defense, and two solid role players who contribute secondary scoring.

Go easy on it guys. I know vanek just had a great game tonight.... it was just an idea. Hope it's not awful

Buffalo takes it up the pooper. Bad proposal.

Buffalo's giving up way too much offense. I could see them dealing one of those guys but not both.

Pens would be giving up way too much defense. Staal is a shutdown guy for them up front and Orpik is the same on the back end.

Uh, not quite. Both Pominville and Vanek are laughably overpaid, and the Penguins go from strong to mediocre at both center and defense.

It makes no sense, not even for Buffalo, who becomes even more devoid of scoring.

Pittsburgh doesn't do this Vanek & Pomminville are overpaid this trade won't help them in the playoffs with Staal & Orpik gone along with Kunitz too.

The Pens can't really do this, they're practically giving up an entire PK unit.

I don't think Ennis and Kassian are ready to shoulder that kind of offensive responsibility just yet.

makes sense, but i doubt either team does it. the sabres can't afford to lose 2 of their best scorers, the pens stray very far from the team that won the stanley cup losing key pieces of their defensive puzzle. i could definitely see a deal based around Pomminville to Pittsburgh at the deadline if the sabres are out of the playoff picture, though.

Sorry, but how would the Penguins be "mediocre" at center while Crosby and Malkin are still there?

its an interesting proposal, but i think a buffalo fan/pitt fan would have better input on this deal than myself. i just dont have a good enough opportunity to watch the sabres and pens

not exactly. the gap between staal and gaustad is quite large.

some could argue the same in regards to the gap between pommer and kunitz

im just saying, fans value their players differently, and your argument is valid nonetheless

Pittsburgh gets destroyed in this deal. Vanek and Pominvile are both hugely overpaid. This trade does increase their offense by a lot, but it destroys their defense much more.

No to both, and I'm not your typical smug Pens fan. Don't want any part of those contracts coming Pittsburgh's way. As far as the other one, the gap between Kunitz and Pominville ain't that great. I like Pominville but Kunitz puts up 55-60 points at the end of the day. No reason to go out of your way to make a small improvement there, and the contract reflects the improvement so it's almost like we're giving away Staal and not really improving much at wing when you consider the salary cap.

I highly doubt Pittsburgh would be willing to take on Vanek's huge contract.
