List your home team's most likely draft need

For the benefit of all mock drafters who are in charge of another cities drafting, name your favorite team's most likely entry draft position need.

For example, Tampa will likely be looking for a scoring line type forward, 6'2"+ preferred, with no character issues.

They have been drafting so many defensemen recently that they will have trouble finding places for them all to play, so defense is unlikely. They have 4 young goalies with good potential, although not generally considered blue chippers. It's still possible they may look at goalies, but not as likely as forward.

Here's a couple teams:

Colorado: Needs a 2-way defenceman with top 3 potential. Prefferably 6'3ish with some hands to move the puck. Dream Player: Jack Johnson, Realisticly: Jakub Kindl

Nashville: Needs a center prospect. Needs to be good at faceoffs and have a good work ethic. Doesn't have to score alot but a scoring touch would be nice, hopefully be able to step in after a year in the AHL. Doesn't have to be big but larger than 6' would be best. Dream Player: Crosby Realisticlly: Brule

Columbus: Needs good d-man. Jack Johnson is the man.

The Habs need help on the blueline, in both quality and quanity, both puck-movers and stay-at-home types.

Many teams that will probably be drafting ahead of them like Buffalo also have defence as a top priority, so by the time the Habs pick in the first round, Luc Bourdon, Ryan Parent, Marc Staal, and of course Jack Johnson will all probably be off the board.

And of course forwards with size are a perennial need. Alex Bourret or Guillaume Latendresse may be available mid-first round.

The Habs select pretty evenly from across Europe and don't really focus on one particular country.

In North America they naturally favour the QMJHL and, like many other NHL teams, are drafting more and more out of the NCAA (three straight first round picks out of NCAA: Hainsey-2000, Komisarek-2001, Higgins-2002). Their scouting south of the border has really picked up in recent years to the point where they even drafted a kid out of U.S. high school last season (J.T. Wyman, 4th round).

The Flyers need wingers that can put up points (Bobby Ryan, hello?), and more depth on defense, preferably big and mean crease-clearers.

This could really go in the prospects board... NYR needs a bluechip offesnsive prospect at LW, C would be even better. That would cap our system, which is good as it is... we have lots of future 2nd liners, depth forwards, top-notch goalies, good d-men (though I expect Maloney/Sather to get a d-man in the 2nd). Crosby would be the best thing for us, but I doubt we'll be top 5... realistically, my draft list would be as follows:

1. Crosby
2. Brule
3. Johnson
4. Ryan
5. Pouliot
6. Koptitar
7. Latendresse
8. Bourret
9. Skille
10. McArdle
11. Bertram
12. Zagrapan
13. Setoguchi
14. Bergfors
15. O'Marra
16. Staal
17. Kindl
18. Stoa
19. Trukhno
20. Parent
21. Istomin
22. Lashoff
23. Lee
24. Bourdon
25. Hensick
26. Zubov
27. Laakso
28. Anikeenko
29. Jackson
30. O'Reilly

Anaheim draft needs:

-Franchise first line center (with Getzlaf as a great second line center)

-Top pairing defensmen to go with Smid (preferably North American-Marc Staal?)

-Future #1 goalie with Bryzgalov already 25 and not much else in the system.

Boston needs scoring forwards with some size and grit and possibly a powerplay quarterback, depending of the development of Jonsson and the health of Girard.

What I feel the Canucks need is an impact offensive prospect AND an impact D prospect... which one of these needs we try to fill with this coming draft probably depends on who is availiable at the time we pick.

Edmonton - Puck moving defenceman.

Ideally: Jack Johnson

Relistically: Jakub Sindl, Jakub Vojta, Brian Lee, Luc Bourdon

Outside of Johnson the Oilers should look more at a topline centreman:

Ideally: Crosby

Realistically: Hanzal, Kopitar, Bergfors (I know hes a winger but he's terrific)

Blues need the best talent available at forward or defense.

Bergfors would be nice if he falls to us.

If we go with a forward in the 1st, need to get a d-man in the second or vice-versa.

Would like to get Stastny in round 3 if he is still there or maybe trade down in the second round to get him.

Maybe take a chance on a NA goaltender in the mid rounds.

I'd like to see it come out to be - 4 F, 4 D-man, 1 Goalie a nice balance of picks to restock the system. If we have all our picks, not sure if we traded any of our 05's.

Phoenix Needs:
1) Top 2 line center with size
2) Left Wing
3) Goal (although it is safe to say they won't use their first rounder on a goalie - they bypassed Montoya last year without hesitation due to the presence of LeNeveu in their system)
4) Big Stay at Home Defenseman

Some assumptions/tendencies you can make about Phoenix and their drafting philosphy:
1) Focus on Speed (with players like Tanabe, Nagy, Wheeler, Chimera, Sjostrom, etc. in the system this is a team that is intent on focusing on team speed)
2) Offensive upside - they don't have an offensive superstar in development.
3) Not afraid to go with longer-term development picks early in draft (Koreis, Eager, Wheeler, Lisin, are just a couple of examples of recent early selections)
4) With Size - You can count the number of their top 10 prospects under the 6' mark on one hand and have plenty of fingers left over. Outside of Ballard - they have made conscious choices to get big.

** A special note is their love for the NCAA system. A number of their players/prospects are graduates of the NCAA system including: David Leneveu, Jeff Taffe, Krys Kolanos, Keith Ballard, Mike Comrie (ok, he was there for a good timem, not a long time), Matt Jones, Joe Callahan, Blake Wheeler (soon to be joining University of Minnesota), Westrum, etc.

bump

Is anyone going to run a mock draft incorporating these parameters? We need some more fans to fill out the needs for each team. I actually have already completed some work on a spreadsheet that uses the last four seasons to calculate a draft order. I weighted things as follows:

5% - 2001
15% - 2002
30% - 2003
50% - 2004

Here's my proposed draft order:
1) Pittsburgh
2) Columbus
3) Chicago
4) Florida
5) Atlanta
6) Rangers
7) Carolina
8) Washington
9) Phoenix
10) Anaheim
11) Buffalo
12) Nashville
13) Los Angeles
14) Minnesota
15) Calgary
16) Montreal
17) Islanders
18) Edmonton
19) San Jose
20) Tampa Bay
21) St Louis
22) Boston
23) Vancouver
24) Toronto
25) Dallas
26) New Jersey
27) Philadelphia
28) Colorado
29) Ottawa
30) Detroit

Minnesota- A top 6 winger to compliment the team...that's about it. Goaltenders, meh! We pick them up on free agency...We got enough defensemen and enough centers...

The Leafs:

A scoring winger with size and goal scoring ability. A great skater with great hands.

Benoit Pouliot and Niklas Bergfors.

Nashville was in the playoffs last year, are they getting a top 3 pick? Brule is not realistic for them.
