Big defensive test. If the first line plays as lazily on the defensive side of the puck as they have against Buffalo and Toronto, Malkin and Crosby will take over the game.

I guess it's a matter of conditioning, now. Alberts has struggled for the past couple of games so if Ballard draws in, I would imagine it would be in AA's place.

Got to be wary of the Pens' offense, most potent we've faced in a while. Our special teams and Luongo will really need to bring it.

These guys will probably suffer from "End of the road trip" blues, come out flat, get down by a couple goals and never recover. I hope I'm wrong, but thats rarely the case.

Ballard skating with Rome at practice in Pitt. Looks like he's back in and Alberts is out. Hamhuis is missing from the skate though

sportsnetmurph
Hamhuis just took a maintenance day to give his foot a break.

Yay! Ballard finally gets a game. Rome's immunity idol remains intact, but Alberts was definitely the worse of the two last night. I suspect we'll see the return of the Hamhuis-Bieksa pairing, which I'm not opposed to as the defense seemed miles better when we had Edler-Ehrhoff as the top pair, the rest can shake down however they want I suppose.

Good news for Ballard, hopefully with his improved conditioning he'll be able to bring a solid impact from the back end. Wouldn't mind him sending Malkin head over heels and then dropping Crosby again like he did with FLA.

Too bad for Alberts after such a strong start but, that's accountability for you I guess. No nights off on this defensive core. (awaits Bieksa references)

So I guess we don't really know who is coming out yet; Hamhuis resting that foot today.

We'll finally be icing our complete lineup tomorrow. Knowing our luck, though, a minor injury will be announced an hour before gametime. Salo doesn't count because we knew he'd be injured.

Another big game from the Sedins while the new-look defence struggles just enough to make Luongo look brutal.

6-4 Canucks

Daniel x2
Raymond x2
Burrows
Bieksa

Either Crosby or Malkin dominate. I'm leaning towards Crosby right now.

Canucks will win to quiet down some of the nitpicking for a few days until they return home to lose to the Blackhawks!

I think Rome should come out but as I said before, I gave up trying to understand the way the D was being handled a number of games ago. Ballard is essentially a better version of Rome, where as Alberts' skill set is a little more difficult to replace. Ballard also has a much better shot than Rome, he gets it off quicker and is far more accurate.

Edler-Ehrhoff
Hamhuis-Bieksa
Alberts-Ballard

Will probably never happen though.

Anyway, no clue how this game will go. I had a feeling we'd lose in Buffalo but you get the feeling the Canucks will want to end the trip on a high note. I hope MAF is net, that would help.

I, too, think that Rome should be the one out of the lineup. Say what you will about the Hamhuis giveaway in OT, but Rome was floating up at the blueline, leaving two guys down low. His sloppy D put Hamhuis in a bad position, forcing a turnover. Keep Alberts in, ditch Rome for awhile.

Rome is a perfect #7. Cheap and can preform well in small spurts. this is no longer a small spurt and he's starting to get exposed.

Need to be much better in our own zone to pull this one off. Canucks have looked tired on this road trip. Hopefully better competition will bring about a better effort.

It doesn't suprise me that it looks like Alberts is the odd man out with Ballard coming back in. Alberts was -3 last night and he didn't register a hit last night either. Not to mention that Rome has been playing on the 2nd PP unit (good, bad, or otherwise).

I would sincerely hope the Rome on the PP experiment comes to an end upon Ballard's return to the team. Ballard has more offensive ability in his gas than Rome has in his entire body.

Exactly what I noticed too, both were to blame. I was baffled at why Rome was way up high that play. I'm a proponent of Rome out, Ballard in.

I would sincerely hope so as well, but would bet against it. Rome was on the PP when Ballard was in, and I believe he has continued practicing on the PP today.

I suspect it will soon enough, once Ballard asserts himself.

I thought the whole defence looked off last game without the Edler-Ehrhoff pairing. IMO the defence top to bottom last game should have been:

Edler-Ehrhoff
Hamhuis-Rome
Alberts-Bieksa

I've been impressed by Alberts-Bieksa as a bottom pairing. This game, slot in Ballard for Rome and you have:

Edler-Ehrhoff
Hamhuis-Ballard
Alberts-Bieksa

Three pairings you feel comfortable with. If you're worried, sit one of the 4th liners and have Rome as an emergency fill-in in case Ballard can't handle the minutes or Alberts has one of those games.

On the other side of things, anyone think AV will push Samuelsson up with the Sedins again? I haven't loved his fit this season, but the energy and speed of Burrows, Kesler and Raymond looked impressive in the 3rd period in Buffalo.

I might keep Samuelsson there for this game because we know how streaky he can be. He put in a legit goal against Buffalo so maybe see if he's going to go on one of those crazy scoring streaks again?
