He has to pass through waivers in order to be assigned to the 'A in the first place. This is only so he can be sent down to play in Charlotte, since, as Boom Boom Anton mentioned, the press box would be getting full otherwise.
umm, yeah exactly. i dont get what people dont understand about this......
if you go back and look, both sides were saying that Brett Sutter was part of the deal from the beginning, late october, early november time frame, before the bar fight, and that the canes actually wanted him here. Canes didnt just take him as a dump and then pawn him off. they are sending him down to the A cause it is already jammed up top.
some people....or apparently quite a few, are ver short sighted in the matter.
So Sutter trades his son, only to have the other team send him through waivers and back to the minors?
Calgary sent him to the minors before they traded him. He was not playing in the NHL since mid October. I really dont understand what is funny. This stuff happens all the time...
I wouldnt want to do it either, but I'd rather waive him myself than make him feel like two teams dont want him by trading him THEN having him waived. Haha
Regardless, this kid has to feeling a little down right about now.
I would have just rather waived him myself than him feel completely unwanted by 2 teams.
If he's going to feel all emo and sit in a corner and cry over a routine trip down to the AHL (something that a player at his skill/talent level can't be unfamiliar with) then perhaps pro sports isn't his calling in life?

Finally, another voice of reason, Anton be praised!
lmao and people thought Carolina got the better end of the deal.
Carolina knew exactly what they were getting. They had just picked up Bodie to replace TK, then they went out and dealt TK with Babchuk for the better defenseman in the deal. Sutter was a throw-in who they apparently liked for some reason.

Oh I know you guys knew what you were getting, it's the fans of other teams coming into these threads saying "Carolina wins(!)," when both teams were just doing a lateral shakeup on defense.

yeah, that pretty much sums it up, nothing to see here.
Would love to see Buffalo claim him for either the big club or Portland. would give them the depth at centre to waive Neidermayer, and either bring up Luke Adam (thereby sending Sutter to the Pirates), or let Brett centre the 4th line. Off-ice troubles be damned, would be a definate step in the right direction.

I don't remember seeing Sutter on waivers at all this season, so how did they just send him down?
I thought I read the Hurricanes were sending him to Charlotte yesterday on their site in the article about the trade. Can someone explain why Sutter had to be waived and couldn't just be assigned to Charlotte after the trade? Is it because he was on Calgary's roster, so he goes directly to Carolina's, thus making them have to waive him to get him down?

He was on a conditioning stint in Abbotsford.
I also wonder about the second part you wrote, I remember one of the articles saying that Brett would still be on the Canes roster, but be on a conditioning stint in Charlotte until they figure out where to put him.?

The way I understand it, he was in the AHL on a conditioning stint, which means that he was earning his NHL salary and that he could only be in the 'A a maximum of two weeks. Waiving him was done so as to formally assign him to Charlotte and have him earn the AHL salary on his two-way contract.

Reason: Changed "this" to "waiving" in the last sentence so as to avoid confusion
If you were to claim a player, you can't send him down to your AHL affiliate without once again placing him on waivers can you?
well i am not sure. i imagine that if he was on the big club and you claimed him, he would be assigned to your big club. however, since usually a player on waivers is cause he is being sent to the AHL, he may end up on the AHL roster of whoever is claiming him. I guess it is all a little confusing to me still

But if Buffalo claimed him and wanted to send him to Portland, they would have to put him on waivers also..so not sure this would work like you are suggesting.
