I'm curious to know if anyone knows what player the flyers had on their radar the year we got second and chicago got first pick.
If we had of won the lottery would we still have picked JVR or does anyone know if Kane was on the brass's radar more?
I've always wanted to know and I'm hoping someone out there has heard straight from the horses mouth.
I did hear immediately after the draft that even if they did get first they would have taken JVR but that's simply the right thing to say.
I would think the Flyers would have went with size and drafted JVR but don't know for sure.
Unless I can get a quote from someone saying otherwise, my guess would be that JVR was their guy from the get go because of his size and style of play. Not that Kane wasn't the best player available, but they probably thought that JVR would fit better on the team. That's just my guess though.
I recall vividly when we lost the luck of the lottery draw Holmgren saying "we cannot even lose to win." I also recall him pretty much saying Kane was the number 1 pick but that JVR and Turris were close. He mentioned Gagner and Voracek but not as much as Kane, JVR and Turris. I'm pretty sure Holmgren realized Kane was the sure pick at 1 if they had gotten it.....sadly we may have picked up a highly skilled softie instead...
I didn't even like Kane that much, and I will admit I was wrong there, he's hands-down the best player from that draft. JVR still has a chance to be #2, but that opportunity is slipping away slowly every day. If he can't make an impact by 23, I'll be ready to pretty much write the kid off as a bust.
I remember in a bit before the 07 draft took place there was a picture of Homer in front of a white board with a list of names fromt he 07 draft class. It had the players with most interest at the top and least at the bottom.
And the top 3 were:
Kane
JVR
Turris
Not sure if anyone can uncover that picture or not but it has been ingrained in my mind because the hockey Gods laughed their ***** off when we got 2nd overall and were unable to pick Kane.
