Least favorable outcome short of losing him. Basically guarantees his exit is delayed at most a year.

I dunno. It could be used as a defensive measure to ward off offer sheets so as to keep things nice and simple.

You think about arbitration if Weber has a down year, and he demands 8m/yr.

Sure, you may ward off offer sheets with arbitration, but you are only signing him to one year contract if he goes to arbitration, making him a UFA the next. Which, increases the risk of losing him significantly.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's only if it ever reaches the arbitrator. IIRC, you can sign any contract y'all like between filing and the actual day of.

He'll never make it to arbitration. Guaranteed. The only reason to file would be to shield off offer sheets. We would either sign or trade him before the hearing.

I am assuming that we would get more out of a trade than we would from RFA compensation. If I'm assuming wrong then we don't file for arbitration.

By filing for arbitration, you are saying one of two things:

1) We don't think you're worth what you're asking for, and we're going to try to prove it.

2) We think other teams are going to give you more money, and we don't want to give them them that opportunity.

Either way, not a good a situation. I hope he's signed to a reasonable extension before then (around 6m). Or, traded for Malkin

There is already a thread about what is going to happen with Shea Weber.

If he's still unsigned by late June it's not a good situation whether we file for arbitration or not. I think Feb is a good deadline to get a deal done by.

I'd say it's a viable option. The Pens took Fleury to arbitration in 2008 and got a deal I would imagine they were happy with, especially after Fleury was an integral part of their Cup run the following year.
