Realistically, who should the Habs target now that Markov's gone?

the only two players i had in mind which i thought were "realistic" were Kuba and Kubina.

Losing him for nothing come UFA time I guess is a better choice.

Personally I'd like to see Marek Zidlicky.

Money on the pp and not too bad defensively.

In a perfect world I'd want Kaberle for a 1st and a mid level prospect. I'd throw in additional picks if needed.

But alas it falls short of what Burke AND Leafs fans want.

If the Canucks are moving anyone, it's Bieksa

He's probably our best option because he should come pretty cheap and he could be a 20-22 min guy.

I think Kaberle WILL get moved this year, but it would be for 2-3 months yet as Burke desperately wants to make the playoffs, I don't see Kaberle going before the deadline.

There were 17 teams scouting Bieksa at the Canucks - Sabres game last week (I'm a Canuck fan) so I'm actually not sure at all what the return is going to be.

Bieksa is capable of playing 23 - 25 minutes a game and is top 4 on most of the teams in the league, has a not terrible cap hit and has two 40 point seasons

All Canuck fans are dumping on him but I think we could get good return for Bieksa

Cammalleri and Bieksa seem to have a little personal rivalry going on.

Kevin Bieksa: "Maybe one day we'll be teammates but with Montreal, I'm six inches too tall to be signed right now."

No Bieksa please! He's the ultimate teammate but not a good defenseman, I watch him every game.

It would cost too much is actually a very important thing.
Right now, there is not one team that is willing to trade a top 2 D. It's too early in the season, nobody is out of a PO race, there's simply no reason to move players unless it's for attitude or cap reasons.
We should know, at least I hope, this week, how long Markov will be out for. If he's out 3months than that higher quality D that could help us go far in the POs might end up being him.
If it's not, then we have until deadline to make proper adjustments and see what's available out there.

Right now, we're in 2nd place for GA/GP. Only Boston is ahead but they've also played 2games less. We're 1st place on the PK. Our defensive game is clicking very well.
There is no need for us to rush in a trade for a top Dman.

Also, the area our team would need the most help on now is the offense.

But, before exploring trading venues, we should try to see what our prospects can give us.

''if it aint broke, don't fix it''. We're winning right now. No need to change anything at the moment.
