The date has finally been set.

The Spectrum will be demolished during a ceremony on Nov. 23. The one-hour wrecking ball event will commence with a free viewing party that is open to the public, including a block party with dollar hot dogs and soft drinks.

Philly sports legends Bernie Parent, Bob Clarke and Julius Erving will attend the demolition.

“The Spectrum will always be a special place for so many people,” Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider said in a statement. “And, while the bricks and mortar may soon be gone, the memories will live with us forever. The Spectrum has meant so much to me, personally, and while it is a very sad moment, I reflect back on all of the terrific memories and excitement that the Spectrum brought to millions of people. It really gives me a thrill to have been a part of that.”

The demolition of the 43-year-old Spectrum also signals the start of construction for Philly Live, a retail, restaurant and entertainment district.

Cool video of Tocchet returning to the Spectrum and talking about it one last time before it gets torn down.

Needless to say it would be greatly appreciated if someone could snap off some high resolution pics and post them. My wife caught me looking at plane tickets earlier this week, she went straight out to to the garage and returned with our hedge clippers and pointed to my balls!

Finally getting the construction started. Can't wait for there to be a real hotel at the sports complex.

Comcast SportsNet, the leader in regional sports, will celebrate the history of the Spectrum with a one-hour live special at noon Tuesday. “The Spectrum’s Final Show” will be hosted by Michael Barkann in studio, along with Neil Hartman who will be live outside the Spectrum.

In addition to live coverage of the wrecking ball hitting the legendary arena, viewers will hear from Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider, Flyers alums Bernie Parent and Bob Clarke, and Philadelphia 76ers Julius “Dr. J” Erving.

“The Spectrum’s Final Show” will replay Tuesday night at 11 p.m.; Wednesday at 4 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m. The program will also be available on Comcast On Demand beginning on Wednesday.

The Spectrum opened on Sept. 30, 1967, with the Quaker City Jazz Festival. After nearly 40 seasons of Philadelphia Flyers hockey and Philadelphia 76ers basketball, the Spectrum gave way to the Wells Fargo Center in 1996. The two teams moved to their new home, paving the way for a minor league hockey team, the Philadelphia Phantoms, and a new indoor soccer team, the Philadelphia Kixx, to call the Spectrum “home.”

It's kind of weird seeing the Wells Fargo Center has been opened since 96. Anyone else think it's gone by very fast?

I hope somebody tapes that show and puts it on the internet somewhere. I'd really like to see that.

^ Oh, Phoebe Cates.

Info regarding the sale of bricks...

http://www.nba.com/sixers/news/spect...s__101122.html

Quote:
Comcast-Spectacor will begin selling authentic bricks from the Spectrum as soon as demolition commences on Tuesday, November 23 at 12 p.m. Orders can be placed in person during the Spectrum’s "Final Shot" on Tuesday, November 23 or on line at RememberTheSpectrum.com. Each brick is $39.95 plus tax. Shipping and handling are extra.

These limited-edition bricks sit on a wood base and contain an official certificate of authenticity. They will be shipped four to six weeks after the final demolition in a commemorative Remember The Spectrum box. The bricks may vary in color, style and condition due to location and sun exposure. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation.

Demolition of the Spectrum will make way for Philly Live, a spectacular new retail, restaurant, and entertainment district. Cordish Company, of Baltimore, MD, a world-renowned developer of similar projects throughout North America, is partnering with Comcast-Spectacor in Philly Live.

Anyway, RIP Spectrum.

I went to my first Flyers game when it was the Corestates Spectrum. Amazing place. Went to a bunch of Phantoms games too.

Its a shame. IMO, Spectrum > The Vet, but the city wont feel that way (overall).

RIP Spectrum. Enjoy stadium heaven, where every game is the SC final.

"I don't care what they put there," Bill Clement said. "The memories are what no one can take away from us. The sticks and bricks might be gone but the memories are the video stored in our memory banks."

That's exactly how I feel about it. I'm all for having a great entertainment venue at the sports complex.

It helps that I will have a little Spectrum shrine in my family room and my imagination is really going crazy with what I can do with the bricks. I'm thinking that will be the flooring underneath the Spectrum seats and jersey case.

Rocking my one (and only) dead show in honor:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd199...85338.flac1648

Have to listen to my favorite Phish show next.
But which one...?

RIP Spectrum.

(BTW, my greatest Flyer memory there was Pelle Lindberg night. Still can visualize Darren Jensen stoning Gretzky on a breakaway)
