Slats in no rush to add Brad

Quote:
The Post has learned, however, that Sather has no intention of offering the financially distressed Stars that absurd combination of young guns, or indeed any permutation of emerging Bluebloods to fill the need for an upper-echelon playmaker to skate with Marian Gaborik, though the absence of such a pivot wouldn't seem to have had anything to do with No. 10's puzzling disappearing act against the Flames in Monday's rollicking 2-1 victory at the Garden.

There is no doubt Sather will mount up, cry giddyup, and pursue Richards -- who won the Conn Smythe playing for coach John Tortorella's 2004 Stanley Cup-winning Lightning -- once he hits the open market on July 1.

But keep in mind that though the check writer will be willing, summer cap space is going to be a squeeze, factoring in Wade Redden's returning $6.5 million hit; the $10-11 million the Blueshirts will have to set aside for pending Group II free agents Callahan, Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov; the absence of an additional bonus cushion in the final year of the CBA; and the possibility, if not likelihood, the NHPA will vote against triggering an additional five percent hike in the cap.
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/range...mrh2DfaNdjhsMM

No surprise here. Sather is rather conservative at the trading deadline. Hasn't traded a #1 pick since 2002. They didn't pay the bounty for Kovalchuk last winter either. Trading a 2nd round pick for Nik Antropov is more in line with what Sather might do than forking over multiple assets for 40 days. Rangers have two 2nds this June.

The CBA stuff is real. Everyone ignores it. We have discussed it in the salary cap sticky.

Throw in new contracts for Boyle and Sauer.

CBA would have gone by up by $150,000 for 2010-11 if the NHLPA voted against the 5% escalator.

Slats will look to add a lefty on defense without giving up a core part.

Hopefully this is true. I would certainly love to add Richards to this team on July 1st. However, we are starting to finally see the rewards of developing a core, I really don't want to see that ruined.

Hopefully we dont give up any kids and wait until 7/1. Also, would not give him more than 5-6 mil. as he will be on the downside of his career.

Eh I say keep the pieces you send for him because he is not really needed Stepan and Anisimov have the top 2 spots covered for a long time to come.

I also find it exciting to see them grow in the top 2 spots, rather then playing 4th line minutes with Boogaard. Since Stepan was promoted to the first line he has a four game point streak and he is starting to get his game going.

Slats will trade a 2nd and mid-tier prospect for a top 4 lefty d-man.

He's 30, no thanks. They won't fit him without serious cap manipulation and a longterm contract. To Slats' credit, he hasn't done any 10+ year contracts (but it doesn't excuse Redden and Drury).

Guess henrik's about to be over the hill then as well?
Complete assinine comment, 30 is still prime.

30's the new 50, don't you know.

I'd like to have Richards on this team, but not through a trade. If he re-ups in Dallas then so be it.

I depends on how we do w/o Rozy. So far we hang on, but his absence is felt. Ideally we want send Rozy back if only we can do without him.

I'm glad he is in no rush to add him, and I hope both Torts and Sather know that the Rangers are more than a Brad Richards away from The Cup. I am okay with a rental player, but unless you are already near the top, I say stay away from the A-list players who will cost an arm-and-a-leg.

If Redden retires and we can add him in the offseason, I'm all for it. Stepan and Anisimov are certainly not top-flight centers at this point, and maybe never will be. Richards is, and at 30, has many good years ahead of him.

And I'd take a GM post with the Mets.

Richards will get at least 30 million over 5 years.

I hope this is correct, because there are very little trades I could see Sather making at the deadline to get Richards that wouldn't have most of us here incensed. We're all pretty comfortable with the fact at this point we won't be front-runners for the Cup, so no rush this year.

I guess......if you focus exclusively on his age, which is only 30. He scored 90+ points last year and is on a 100+ pace this year. I also think his style will allow him to play at a high level for years.

If Richards were a meat product he'd be marked as 50% Off Manager's Store Special.

Because the NHL doesn't work like a meat-counter at your local supermarket, though, he'll command top dollar and a long-term deal.

Do not doubt that he will begin a downward trend shortly and that the long term top dollar deal will hamstring whatever club he signs with for years to come.

At this point there's virtually no way we get him... same goes for July 1.

It's just not feasible cap wise.

Yet.

But I'd def stay away from trading for the guy. It would solve one problem by opening 1, 2 or 3 more.

Good. Slats is actually playing his cards correctly for once.

Methinks that Slats trades for his rights at the draft. Makes sense.

30 is old in this leauge now days!!!! If you think he is going to get 30 million over 5 years your crazy. That would put him up there in the top 10 forwards in this leauge no way. We have two centers right doing a great job there and they are 10 years younger, If Gabby could score with the passes that Stepan has put on his stick the last 3 games we would be fine. No way Slats goes after him right now!!!!

You're right.

Brad Richards is 30 years old. He is not 35. A 30 year old center who puts up 90 points a year is going to get paid, big time.

No, it really isn't. Henrik Sedin is 30 and he just had his best season.
