I think he does think that.. And it's going to matter when he's going to make the decision.

Leino-Briere duo have beautiful chemistry. Two artists and a 'goblin'.

It works.

That could work. Someone should photoshop a picture of Frodo, Legolas and Gimli with their faces.

I don't know if Wellwood can play wing or not, but if we somehow get rid of Matt Walker, and assuming Lappy is on LTIR, he can be paid 3.something million but the team would have no cap room. I'm not sure if this is right since I just took Lappy off, and counted that as him being on LTIR. The way it works is, if you need it you can have it, but it's calculated by day, not by year like cap space in general is right? I gave Nodl 1.5 million, he is currently making $735,000, with $150,000 in possible bonuses. He probably isn't going to demand that much but, on the chance that he continues how he has been playing that or more could be warranted.

edit 2: This is if the cap doesn't go up. I also didn't give Powe a raise, but maybe he gets like another 75,000-$100,000 that way he would have the same or slightly more than the salary Betts makes.

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Andreas Nodl ($1.500m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / Ville Leino ($3.200m)
Darroll Powe ($0.725m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m)
Jody Shelley ($1.100m) / Blair Betts ($0.700m) / Eric Wellwood ($0.580m)

DEFENSEMEN
Chris Pronger ($4.921m) / Matt Carle ($3.437m)
Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m) / Braydon Coburn ($3.200m)
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Oskars Bartulis ($0.600m)

GOALTENDERS
Sergei Bobrovsky ($1.750m) /Michael Leighton ($1.550m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $60,724,156; BONUSES: $1,700,000
CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $375,844

edit: I also wouldn't really mind getting rid of Shelley (though I don't mind if we keep him either- I kind of want to keep him as of right now, which I realize isn't a great move) but I don't think it'll happen. If we do get rid of him we could potentially replace him with a re-signed Carcillo if he would want to stay for the same price.

This would be legendary, and like... in an eerie way... it might be one of the easiest chops you ever made. I second this request!

I can't see why people are suggesting we not keep Leino. He makes this team better. Considering what little we gave up for him, I think hes been a steal and have no problems with keeping him and dealing someone else if necessary

Why would Leino settle for less than what Hartnell is making? Id assume he wants >$4m. He is just as productive as Carter and Briere, he is 27, this is his chance at the biggest pay day of his career most likely, and I would assume he would want to take advantage of it.

When hartnell signed that he had multiple 20+ goal seasons. Not many UFA get huge paydays after 1 good year

At his age I think he's going to want bigger money. He was fantastic in the playoffs and it's carried over into the regular season. I figure he's going to look at 3 million or so.

Because he does not have the body of work to demand that much money. I'd expect him to sign a short deal for a reasonable price, and by the time that deal is up he could look for his payday.

He's also not the Powerforward archetype like Hartnell.

$8M over 3 years or $11M over 4... I'd rather the former. However, if Ville breaks 60 points, he'll likely demand at least $3.5M per season. And if the Flyers don't give it to him, some other team will. As far as I'm concerned, keeping Ville is a necessity, even if it means paying him more money than people on this board are hoping for. If needed, get rid of some of the dead weight to make it happen.

This is the problem Tallon got into in Chicago. Payed Versteeg, Buff, Barker 3+ mil each after 1 good season.

Its better to do a shorter deal 1-3 years at around 2.25 or 2.5 so Ville can prove consistency. I love Ville, and I want him to stay but hopefully he doesnt overvalue himself. He could have a lot of trouble trying to adjust to a new coach and new linemates if he left as a UFA

Yeah his chemistry with linemates can work both ways.

It's possible that Briere and Hartnell will suffer if Leino leaves ...... and equally likely that Leino himself will slump on a new team with new mates.... even if the new team is Pittsburgh and his new linemate is Corsby or Malkin lol!

Seriously, sometimes you click with certain players, and if you move to another line .. even if your new line has more talented players... you still dont click the same way.
