Pierre Gauthier not offering Bergeron a contract

For those who follow twitter, Renaud Lavoie just wrote "GM Pierre Gauthier call agent Paul Corbeil to tell him that Habs won't make an offer to Marc-André Bergeron."

No more Bergeron to Montreal threads.

I don't understand why PG would call up MAB's agent unless MAB's agent called PG first?

Doesn't it seem like a dick move? Unless PG was calling to thank MAB for coming in to help us last season but that unfortunately we were not interested in his services?

No surprise, MAB is still looking for a multi-year contract.

the opposite of a dick move, if MAB has potential offers from other teams (ie. tampa) then by informing him that the habs arent interested or arent going to be going that route he (MAB) can make a decision on which other offer is best for him or what his future will hold etc without saying something like "thanks for the offer, gonna see what the habs do first tho then get back to you" and potentially lose that offer as that team signs someone else

We still need a holitzer though.

the prototype perefect player for the Habs:

-big (not 6'0" 200 lbs big... more like 6'6" 245lbs)
-hits like a train
-fights everyone who gets too close to Price, who knees voluntarily or not Markov or who slams Gionta on the ice as if he was pee wee sized.
-reliable defensively
-can skate
-105 mph shot (rarely misses the net)

Is Al Iafrate still around?

Almost like the description of Souray, minus some things.

You guys are pathetic with the hate toward him... he seems like a great teammate, never complained about anything and actually helped his team last year...

I feel a win is a much much better news, but I might not get it.

With that said, there isn't much surprise here, there's no place for him on the roster and he's not the kind a player who can replace Markov. I wouldn't want him signed.

I'm glad because we don't need him. I hope that also means that Markov is not out too long.

That's the description of Souray in Edmonton when healthy, he's gotten a lot better defensively... but yeah, he has locker room issues and is injury proned.

A player who played a year for Montreal is not going to recieve an offer from the Habs... and it made RDS.ca's headlines!? Really?

Why do I get this awful feeling now that he'll sign in TB for league minimum, all of the sudden turn his defensive game around and be a good player. Boucher

Almost makes me want to sign him and put him in the press box. Steven Stamkos doesn't need yet another player to rack up points with LOL.

Though if he's the same old MAB maybe it would be a good thing if they signed him

For those who want to read Bergeron's comments, it's the main story on rds.ca

He did a good job for us last year, not sure why all the hate. He was brought in to bring a little offense from the point, and did just that. Did people expect him to be some great 2 way machine?

I beg to differ. MAB is a terrible defenseman and he's overrated on the PP. Last year's PP was stagnant even with MAB in the line up and stayed that way until Markov returned in late december. His defensive incompetence not only costed the Habs a lot of goals but also long minutes trapped in our zone because MAB's first pass is worse than Komisarek's. Except his shot and instincts on the PP, there's nothing in Bergeron's game that is NHL caliber and that's why Gauthier doesn't want him back.

And I don't hate the guy. He seemed like a good teammate and he was always ready to face the music after embarrassing losses last year. I just think that hiring him, even if he does help our PP a little, is a step back because it makes the team a lot worse at even strength.

Well, the fact that he can't play defense if his life depended on it probably has something to do with it.

And I can guarantee you many of us probably blurted out the words "****ing Bergeron...." about 3 to 4 times each game last season. That tells you something.
