+/- ON/60 tells the story I'm telling.

Z is +0.75 per 60 minutes on the ice. Powe, as said, is the only guy you can reasonably switch him with for minutes, is at +0.73 per 60 minutes.

And before you say "well, he's been getting time with the 4th line..."

Shelly is +0.80 per 60, and Betts is +1.15 per 60.

I'll be curious how Lavy handles it as we head into December/January when stuff begins to tighten up. Shelley has been as advertised as a player, and the reality is that he's pretty much useless.

I mean, do you keep sitting players that will be playing an important role come playoff time in favor of Shelley? At some point you need all of those guys clicking at a high level...

i'm not even convinced that he will be sitting during the playoffs. he hasn't sniffed the press box yet and there's no indication that he will.

Riley Cote played 70 and 63 games 2 and 3 years ago, and played a grand total of 3 playoff games (all in 2007-8 when John Stevens didn't know what he was doing against the Caps--pretty sure that was the only series he played in).

These enforcer types show up in a fair number of games for their teams during the regular season, and seem to universally disappear with a quickness come playoff time (if the team has a better option, which we do).

If no one is going to fight him, then there's no point in having Shelley... it isn't like he is a good energy/hitter type.

Fact of the matter is that the majority of the forwards on the roster have played more effective shifts than Zherdev to this point, and the PP is very competitive on this club... though, given the struggles, it wouldn't hurt to get him some time on the PP to see if he can make a play happen with the extra space.
Totally agree with Powe, but Id also love to throw Z on the PP. The guy has incredible skill, imagine if they threw him out there on the 4 on 3 powerplay in OT, or even a 4 on 4 shift in OT.

Also, I think Coburn is quietly having a good year, hes been overshadowed by Mesz and O'Donnell but I think him and Kimmo are having a very good year

Both Coburn and Carle are struggling in the goals against category... which is being made up by the fact that O'Donnell and Meszaros are doing absurdly well in that category. Outside of Carcillo (the only minus player on the club), Coburn has the lowest +/- ON on the team. Carle has the worst goals against rate, but his is salvaged by the fact that he also has the 3rd highest goals on rate (behind Nodl and Hartnell -- both ridiculously high at 4.22 and 4.19 respectively).

It's early though, these things will even out. The other day O'Donnell was at 0.40 GAON/60, and that has quickly risen to 1.05 GAON/60 over the last couple of games.

Wow. Great for us. Elias is a Flyers killer. If we can't win this then ugh.

Yeah, I figured he'd get the start. Between Bob losing last game (not through his fault though) and Boosh winning in the playoffs last year against them I figured Laviolette would go with Boosh.

Here are the starting lineups for this afternoon’s game between the Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Center.

DEVILS
Forwards: Alexander Vasyunov-Jason Arnott-Dainius Zubrus. Defensemen: Colin White-Henrik Tallinder. Goaltender: Johan Hedberg.

FLYERS
Forwards: James van Riemsdyk-Mike Richards-Andreas Nodl. Defensemen: Braydon Coburn-Kimmo Timonen. Goaltender: Brian Boucher.

Devils left wing Patrik Elias will not play today. The Devils said Elias is not here for “personal/family reasons.” His wife, Petra, is due to give birth any day now, so I’m guessing that’s what personal reason.

Fun fact: There hasn't been a trade between the Flyers and Devils since they traded Chico Resch to the Devils in 1986.
