Markov will be signed this summer regardless of his injury. He will make good money.
My guess is that he wanted a long term deal that will secure his future. No matter the number of games he plays this year, he will likely sign a one year deal.
Why would he accept a 1 year deal ? Imagine if he SUCK next year , nobody will give him big money.....Not a good way to secure his futur.
Nov 27 D Andrei Markov has been advised to have potentially season-ending knee surgery by three orthopedic surgeons but still hopes to avoid it. The doctors have said the surgery is needed to repair torn ligaments that have kept Markov out the past six games. He's still hoping to rehab the knee without the procedure, which would all but end Markov's season. He is concerned because he's in the final year of a contract which pays him more than $5 million a year. He'll turn 31 on Dec. 20 and he was looking forward to signing a rich deal which would take him to the end of his career. He fears the Canadiens -- and other teams -- will be reluctant to sign him unless he can show he's healthy. There are concerns about his health because the latest injury, which was the result of a knee-on-knee collision with Carolina's Eric Staal, is the third major injury Markov has suffered in a 13-month span. He missed the first third of the 2009-10 season after he tore a tendon in his leg when it was cut by teammate Carey Price's skate in the season-opener. He injured his knee against Pittsburgh in the playoffs and had surgery which forced him to miss the first 10 games this season.

Markov couldn't protect himself from a clean hit on supposedly healthy knees. How the heck is he gonna protect himself on a gimpy knee? Geezz.......he'll probably put his other knee at risk. Markov is a great player but I'd like to see the saga end and just move on for this year. The way it stands the team is in limbo. Did you forget about insurance? Also, Markov's being on LTIR opens up considerable cap room. The question is, who could come close to filling his skate boots for the remainder of the season?

I agree if this is true pull the trigger, I think we are only a few extra tools away from being a contender! props to the management for having long terms goals
But to stay on topic, I really hope Markov takes the advise of the doctors (if these reports are true mind you) as it seems all three have said surgery would be required, and knowing Markov he just wants to let it heal so he can come back to the team asap and start playing for a new contract, but i don't think its the best option! if he needs surgery, then get it done, wait till the season is over, I'm sure PG can give him a 1.5-2.3 million dollar 1 year contract where we can still sign a top 6 forward and a moderate defenseman to fill his gap while hes injured. Interesting to see where PG will take this. I assume we will be granted extra salary if he goes on long term IR??
The less and less we hear I think the worse the injury probably is, he is looking at a doctor to say he can rehab the injury. But, to be truthful Markov didn't look to have the jump he usually has in his skating, I think he would be best to get the surgery instead of possible causing more damage.
Sure it is his UFA year, but Montreal would probably still want to sign him...although I doubt to the long term he would have gotten originally and at the dollar amount he wanted. A one year maybe sounds like a slap in the face to some here, but he does have to prove he can play healthy and to the level he is capable of playing at. Much like the Price contract I am sure it is "show us what you got, and if you got it we will reward you".
I really hate to hear this news. Markov in the line up makes Montreal a contender off the bat. Without him we need to fill that gap with the cap space we have. Once it's official I'd imagine PG will begin working the phones to find some one to help us in a playoff run with the extra cap space.
I'd probably offer a 1 year deal at $4-$5 M and see what happens
from there.

Why would any team give him such a long term contract after suffering back to back key injuries?..Simply won't happen. And he won't get a huge raise either.
Signing around what he currently makes for another year to prove he's not injury prone is the most likely thing to happen. I have a hard time seeing any team offer him a long term deal that would secure his future.
If the above reports are true, then Markov and the Habs are simply in denial of the reality of the situation with his knee. Denial is a common, subconscious defense mechanism when a person is faced in a situation of uncertainty or anxiety.

It's likely true. My mom booked a flight for an "unnamed Habs player" earlier today to Birmingham, Alabama. The only thing that would make sense to me is that Markov is looking for a second (or 3rd,4th,etc.) opinion from a specialist over there.
I think he should see the German National Soccer team (and FC Bayern's) head doctor, Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, that guy is famous in the medical circles. Or the world reknown knee surgeon who worked on Owen Hargreaves, Richard Steadmam who owns a company focusing on sports injuries financed by... uncle George Gillette!

I was walking my dog in the streets tonight and I crossed path with Markov! My dog got in front of him and started sniffing and licking around his knee...Yea, makes sense.
Markov needs to take all the time in the world. Yes it sucks that he has to play for a new contract later, but a guy with his hockey sense, vision and talent can be an amazing player until he's 40. All he has to do is make sure he's healthy and take the time he needs. If he wants to stay with the habs, he can re-sign here at the same amount he made last year I'm sure. No way the habs let him walk.

Most of what makes Markov good is not his skating, it never has been. It's his hockey sense and his passing. Even with a bad leg, he can still put up 40 pts and be our best dman.
Even then, I'm not worried. As long as he doesn't do something stupid and try to play for his contract and put his career in danger..

Guy I played against, I think they were called the valley when I lived in NS had an artificial leg. Pretty impressive considering it was AAA. Oh to be 13 again. lol.

What ? He was great in the few games before the injury... Markov was never a fast skater, agile, yes, but not fast...
His vision, instinct and passing skills are what separates him from the rest and that doesn't disapear with an injured knee... if his knee can hold on (that's a big if), he'll still be one of the top D-man in the league, no doubt.
Markov needs to do the surgery and be ready for next year. Yes, it could mean he won't make as much next year but if he bounces back well he will still sign a very lucrative contract the following year. Looking at how much time Gonchar missed and he still makes great money.
