It will take some time longer than Chris Drury had hoped before the captain will be able to return to the lineup in the aftermath of a CT-scan yesterday on his broken left index finger, The Post has learned.

"It was not good," a disappointed Drury said on his way out of the Garden after the Rangers fell 3-1 to the Penguins.

Drury, who missed the first two games of the season with the broken finger he sustained on the third day of training camp and then re-broke the finger in two places during the Oct. 15 home opener, has been skating on his own without permission to grip a stick.

It's believed the captain had targeted either this weekend or next week for his return, but that will have to be pushed back following the CT-scan that revealed the finger has not fully healed.

Still, The Post has learned the captain will be permitted to skate with a stick within the next couple of days before being slowly integrated into practice drills and then contact.

He probably is, but it doesn't make a difference cap-wise unless we are looking to bring someone in to replace him while he's hurt. Players on LTIR still count against the cap.

Can't they place him on LTIR retroactively?

I don't know if you can make that assumption. Considering that he had a broken finger originally, and then broke it again in two separate places, that's a lot of trauma concentrated in one area. It makes sense that it would take longer than usual to heal, if it ever does completely at all.

Ronnie Lott did exactly that. Too bad the finger is more important in hockey though.

LTIR is available when you are playing to the cap. Almost a first in a few years, but the Rangers are under the salary cap at the moment.

The Rangers would only use LTIR if they needed to go over the cap with a replacement w/ Drury, which they do not need to.

Even though Drury is injured, his salary still completely counts regardless of what the Rangers do.

As long as Drury misses 10 games (which he has), the Rangers at any point can put him on LTIR retroactively, if they wish to exceed the cap with a high priced replacement.

LTIR lets us exceed the cap if we need to. But we don't. So no.

I used to think LTIR would just remove the cap money of the injured player for the period of time he was out, i.e. Drury out 20 games = $1.72M (about 25%) cap that opens up but I was clearly wrong. It only allows us to exceed the cap by that much if we are replacing him while he is injured. We can't exceed the cap once he is back. Sad news to learn. I was thinking for the beginning of the season that with his absence and Gaborik's stint on the LTIR, we'd have extra cap space to use to our advantage, even if we didn't need to. Dolan is probably glad though. Doesn't disability insurance pay for their salary while they are injured?

Why the hell does that article keep referring to him as the captain?? That's weird. Like what the sportsnet guys kept doing in the Flames game.

It seems like a constant race to see who can make a return later in the season; Drury or Prospal.

By the end of it, neither will be back by the trade deadline.

You mean he isn't already on LTIR? So we're spending valuable cap space for him to be in the press box every week?

crap, just read n8's post above. that sucks.

Well, personally I hope it's a career ender, not because I have anything against the guy, but because it would free up 7 mil in cap space for next season.

Unfortunately that won't be the case.

Also says Vinny has done some skating, but nothing with pads on.

I think Drury will for sure. Give him the 10 days. So then what?

The easy move is send White down but show the heck is benched at that point?

Whenver Vinny gets back we are really jammed up which I agree will be sometime in January and likely late in th month.

start offering up my favorite Frolov ,Christensen package around the league,lol................heck if they can deal Higgins and Kotalik they can deal those two for something of value

LOL. Wasnt this the situation BEFORE Drury broke the finger?

If all goes well, Drury could return in a week to 10 days. There is no ETA on Prospal, who underwent surgery on Oct. 18 on the same knee he had scoped late last December.
