Blake Wheeler

Grebeshkov (3.15m) & 4th Rnd or Reddux
For
Wheeler & Ference (2.825m+1.4m=4.225m)

Both players have similar contracts (RFA in '10).
Each seems to fit the other teams needs.
This deal would allow Boston to keep Kessel.
Wheeler is 23yrs, 6-5, plays both wings and scored 21 goals in his 1st year.

Scouting Report from sportsnet.
Assets
Has tremendous size for the wing position, as well as decent speed. Controls the puck effectively in the corners and can play either wing position

Flaws
Will he be able to score at a consistent level in the National Hockey League? Still needs a little work on his defensive-zone coverage.

Career potential
Power forward.

I think i'd take that trade, then move Nilsson for cap space..

Penner - Horcoff - Hemsky
O'Sullivan - Gagner - Wheeler

Looks good to me.

But one question, does Wheeler play as big as he is?

I'd give Wheeler that 1st line spot. He gelled with Krejci, who's to say he won't gel with Hemsky?

As for the proposal, it seems fair, but I don't think the Oilers would want Ference and his contract coming back this way.

Hands off Grebeshkov. He is going to be the next Visnovsky.

Even if you find something that is equal value I find it hard to imagine Boston trading Wheeler. He would look nice in Oiler silks though.

I like Wheeler, but considering the way he slapped Phoenix in the face and signed with Boston, I doubt he'd be very happy here.

Raise the pick to a higher round and switch the dman to Smid?

Smid has asked for a trade numerous times, and it'd take more than Smid and a 4th to get Wheeler, let alone Wheeler and Ference.

Agreed, also cap doesn't work because Wheeler's cap hit is mainly bonus, he makes 875,000, thats what counts against the cap.

What about...

Bergeron and Wheeler
=7.575

for

Gilbert, Cogliano and Schremp?
=5.133

Then Staios and Pouliot to NYI for Witt...

Bergeron's numbers dropped significantly last year and the younger core has seemingly over-taken him. His injuries are also a factor, and his value may be at its lowest right now. He's a pretty proficient face-off man as well at 54+% last season. We'd add some much needed size to our top six as well.

Wheeler-Bergeron-Hemsky
Nilsson-Gagner-Pisani
Penner-Horcoff-O'Sullivan
Moreau-Brule-Stortini
Jacques/Potulny

Visnovsky-Smid
Souray-Grebeshkov
Witt-Peckam

I like that deal and that team. That's a playoff team. Don't think Boston takes it, however, you never know. Cogs is one year away from negotiating a new deal, so it still gives them a year to go for another cup run with a decent player. Would they lose too much offense? Probably. Would this team fit under the cap? At first glance, I don't think so.

These are the kind of deals we need to make to add size and talent to our core as we build.

Do not cap bonuses count against the cap? Unless he signed this contract before the current CBA (which I don't believe he did) his bonus counts against Boston's cap.

I like Wheeler, but I'm not into the idea of trading Grebeshkov at all. Ever.

From what I heard there is a bonus cushion and the bonuses only count if they make the criteria which Wheeler won't. Last year there was no cushion but this year there is again.

Boston cannot take on 2.4 mil in cap hits. They have 1.1 mil without any bonuses as it is with 22 players signed.

What a good deal for both sides. You should start a thread with this proposal.
