What Avery did was a mockery. What Pronger did was part of the game. If Pronger took his stick with his hands still firmly on the stick and raised it at eye level and never touched the puck with this have been legal? It is part of the game, it is called gamesmanship, getting leverage any way you can to gain an advantage.

The goalie does it in the same circumstance by slashing the fwds calf/ankle, this is just as much of a distraction or disruption to the play but it goes uncalled, why? Because it is part of the game. What Avery was doing was a joke in its fullest sense, not so much with Pronger.

Well for one thing, the slash should have been called because it was blatant. The Avery incident was as big as it was because of Avery's history. What Pronger did wasn't as bad but the minor was warranted, it should just have been whistled down immediately.

If they are going to call the USC on Pronger then they need to enforce the slash. But IMO it is, and has been, all part of the game. When Avery did his little dance was without question but Pronger putting his arm out to distract the keeper is just part of the flow of the game much like tugging a guys jersey.

Bottom line is Prongers action should not have had this much of an impact on the outcome of the game. It was part of the give and take between a fwd and the netminder. The ref needs to see this and realize that unless it is an action which would warrant a USC being given he needs to let the flow of the game progress. The fact that he made the call was purely another action by refs saying "look at me" type of action.

It is watering down the game and giving one more reason to give the refs a chance to be bigger than they should be.......slash on back of ankle, screen with arm for 1.5 seconds no different than any other screen, play on.
