Didn't think it was much, Isles player with a little embellish and now we're talking suspensions

Prediction: 0 games suspended

Every shoulder check ends with the hitting arm moving upwards. Problem is dude was leaning down towards the puck so of course it was an elbow. That was a spot for Cally to let up, but I kind of think it happened too fast for him to just avoid the hit. I can see a suspension, but only to follow the rules strictly there was no cook/kaleta type intent here obviously.

That's the thing, in that spot Cally can't let up cause what if that player decides to run into him, he's gotta brace for a hit. That's what it look like he did to me, just held his ground.

Either way I'd be surprised if he got anything, he's pretty much the poster boy for hard hitting clean NHL. **** happens once in a while.

Callahan is a pretty clean player even though he is always among league leaders in hits. But...He will get at least a game for that one IMO. If this was a few years ago, it was clean. Nowadays, the hit to the heads demands punishment from the league.

No more than 2 games, no less than 1 IMO.

When MSG showed the reverse angle, it looked pretty clear to me that Cally's elbow made contact with his cheek, however it certainly looked unintentional; I don't think anyone could argue that it was a malicious elbow...Does the league take intent into consideration when deciding whether to suspend a player?

I said right after I saw the replay he is going to get suspended and I still think he will. Huge difference from the Staal hit and the Callahan his is that the player was in a vulnerable position. Stajan was admiring a pass, nielson was looking for the puck. Cally's was more East-West then Staal. Remember that east-west is body proportionate not the way it is moving along the ice.

I still say he gets 2 games out of it, but will be very happy to see it get overlooked by the league.

Well, the silver lining to this is that if he gets suspended, there is an outside chance that Zuccarello gets an opportunity.

Don't know if it's homer goggles but I thought Cally was going for a shoulder on shoulder hit. When Nielson avoided the hit he put his head where his shoulder should have been. I would not be surprised with anything between 0-2 games. No injury, no priors, I don't think intent was there. Maybe it's 'reckless' and some discipline is necessary from that standpoint.

If he doesnt get suspended then its purely because of his reputation

It was unintentional, but a bad and dangerous play nonetheless

This board would be up in arms if that play (and the entire situation for that matter) went the other way

You're overreacting. Dangerous? If Nielsen does not try to hold up its a normal bodycheck. Trying to hold back often puts the player getting hit in a more vulnerable spot. Cally hits like this all the time, this is one instance where a guy got lower on him for a change and it looked far worse than it really was.

Almost 100% certain there will be no suspension.

Our own fans continue to amaze me.

Callahan not only has a clean record but has an excellent reputation as a clean, hard working, honest player.

At most I see a small fine, and even that I find doubtful.

Inevitable suspension? The NHL might make some horse ***** calls but Callahan's record is basically flawless. He will not be suspended, in my opinion.

Edit: Of course, my opinion means nothing.

There is a big difference between a hit with the shoulder that ends by pushing off with the arm, and a hit with an elbow.

Messier could throw the elbow with the best of them.

pretty clear cut blindside hit to the head. I know thats not Callys game, but to me, thats a suspendable hit, and I would expect 1-2 games for him.

As Lion Hound said above,

This guy is 2nd in the league in hits, Finished 3rd last year, 4th the year before. He's never been suspended. I would be shocked if he gets suspended, but if he does and its more than a 1 game token suspension to make it look like they care I'd be surprised.

I'd rather our fans sound like this than the way the Calgary fans sounded after Staal's hit. According to them he left his feet and delivered a blindside elbow well after the pass.

The more I think of it, if he gets more than 1 game it's criminal. Hjalmarsson got 2 for what they deemed a blindside hit that was also a boarding hit that injured a player. While I think it was a hit to the shoulder, my opinion does not matter. Thronton targeted a head as a repeat offender, 2 games. I guess we'll see.

Yeah, wasn't that bad, but I could see 1 game or something. Don't think Callahan was trying to hit Neilson like that, but if the NHL wants guys to be more careful about those kind of hits...

Looked like the hit "changed" on Callahan and he didn't get the whole body hit he was going for and what ended up happening was mostly accidental. Cally's a clean hitter

Yeah you could tell by Cally that he didn't mean to hit his head by his reaction after it happened.

I could see Cally getting a game for it. Clean player doesn't matter. Looking at the hit in a vacuum, it's suspendable.
