With the ties being eliminated going 35 games without a loss... or even a 'Regulation' loss... would be monumental... in any sport. That is my candidate for a sports record that will never be eclipsed.
Though in a weaker league, my hometown team EC KAC is currently 17-0-0 in their last 17 games. They are overall 22-1-2 in the season with 29 games left. This is Wins-Losses-Overtime/Shootout Losses since the league doesn't use ties either. I actually can not even estimate when they could be beaten the next time because I don't see any of the other 9 teams in the league being remotely capable of doing so. While they aren't going to go 29-0-0 the rest of the season, I could actually see them making a similar record, in terms of percentage, as the 79-80 Flyers.

While certainly a remarkable feat on any level, the pro ranks is where I believe it will never be matched or bested... Just too many ways to get beat when you are playing against such talent... and look at the waived off Richards goal when Pronger was cited for USC... Too many freaky things can happen even beyond team funks and other teams getting up for the hot team.

Had there been no ties in '79-80 I doubt the record would be set... or at least not be that long. They had to come back late a couple times IIRC, and were lucky as it is to have gone 35 -- although they made their own luck I suppose... they pressed hard to keep the magic going.

I find it ironic that a freak blown offside call allowing a goal in Game Six of the Finals that season stole from them a chance to come back to the Spectrum and win the Cup in seven... They were killers at home back ten... and an unusual OT call against Jimmy Watson in Game One or Two (I forget which) led to the Isles stealing Home Ice. OT penalties were rare back then and had to be very blatant to be called usually. Had that team won the Cup, it would have gone down in Sports History as one of the all time best single season teams ever... as it is, they are a trivia answer (sigh).

Finally found a video of it, though it is a "point camera at TV screen" kind of thing. I hope we can get a better one soon.

Still an awesome commercial:

Good stuff. I think it would've been more epic had Hartnell continued to grow his own playoff beard up to the point of filming and rocked that instead of the fake one.

That is great!!

Timonen apparently willed his beard to grow about 15 minutes before filming. The hair crew then cut Timonen's leftover beard to make Bobrovsky's and JvR's. Pronger caught up with ZZ Top and ripped the beard off Billy Gibbons, using the blood as a natural glue. Then he ripped off Dusty Hill's in case the first beard got messy.

I'll vouch for agrudez. It's one of the worst commercials of all time. There's another one with Morganti which is terrible as well.
