Joe Sakic to begin Front Office Training

Interesting development...

Quote:
WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. — Joe Sakic's start in the business side of the NHL will start today with Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix and general manager Greg Sherman.

Sakic, the Avs' all-time leading scorer and future Hall of Famer, will join Lacroix and Sherman at today's start of the NHL board of governors meeting here, a source close to Sakic said today. He has previously stated his desire to get into the buisness side.

Excellent. Super Joe is a class act and I think having his intelligence and hockey knowledge on the business side will be beneficial. Good PR too.

Sweet!

Do we know what position he's going to be offered or training for?

I imagine the end goal is for Joe to replace PL at the top, though he may make a pit stop at assistant GM or something along the way.

Who knows if he'll even stay with the organization? Sherman and PL have done a good job, I could see Sakic pulling an Yzerman, easy.

There's a difference though. Stevie Y was eager to make a bigger mark in the front office and Holland and his crew are pretty set for a while. Being groomed to take over for PL seems like a natural fit for Joe. PL was retired before, what's not to say he's ready to retire again.

I could see Joe as an Avs or nothing guy.

I agree with Colorado Sports Fan, Joe is not leaving this organisation (atleast i hope so). I just miss him so much, he is so classy and absolutely amazing guy. He's the reason i started to play hockey myself too!

I wish the best of luck to Joe in this as he was my childhood hero growing up watching him play for the Nords. But I hope he only winds up as the GM or President if he earns it, not just out of loyalty. The Yzerman comparable is nice, but I don't want a Kevin Lowe type situation

I hear he's willing to take a paycut to work in the Canucks front office.

While of course being an Avs icon, there is no indication that Sakic would be suitable for jobs such as President or GM.

Quite true, we cannot jump to conclusions although it seems likely he will be gradually eased into a high organizational role.

Sherman = Counting pennies.
Billington & Lecroix = Hockey decisions.
