Deadline deals

Assuming the team is still struggling by the deadline, UFAs
other teams may (or may not) want:

Kovalev to Montreal for Lars Eller - could re-ignite Kovalev and the habs seem to know how to use him - unlike Clouston. Can't see anyone else wanting him.

Leclaire+2nd to Tampa for Brett Connolly - Tampa is on a roll and could do damage in the playoffs with a decent goalie . We're getting a good glimpse of how good Leclaire can be despite the team's bad defense.

No one is going to take Leclaire.

No one.

You're right, they could do damage with a decent goalie. So we'll give them Leclaire. To the rest of the Eastern Conference -- you're welcome.

For the OP (in case you are serious):

1. Montreal traded a #1 goaltender for the 21 year old Eller (a past 11-12th overall pick)
-I think they got jobbed a little by St Louis but Eller is a good young player who I see similar to Peter Regin but seems to have more physical potential...and he's also in the NHL two years before Regin was
-Kovalev doesn't interest Montreal right now, their team is firing on all cylinders...
-Kovalev's maximum return is a 2nd rounder...but more like a 3rd or 4th

2. Brett Connolly is a Grade A prospect and you may come to see that at the WJC this year
-Tampa needs a goaltender but no way would they consider a gamble in Leclaire for what looks like a certain top 6 NHL player...and a player they likely think can play on their top line as a double scoring threat with Stamkos.

Great idea, lets trade the 37 year old russian, for a blue chip forward, and the 4 million dollar glass statue for a top 10 pick last year. Why haven't you done this yet murray?

If we're lucky, we could get a late 2nd for Kovy.

So a team that could go deep in the playoffs wouldn't trade someone currently playing the fourth line for someone who lit it up when he played in Montreal? Eller has been a healthy scratch this year on a team that has good but not great depth. OK then.

I admit that the Brett Connolly for Leclaire and a pick is a big stretch but I think Leclaire can be elite in a better situation than Ottawa.

When that kid is 21 and was the main return on the Halak trade...they will wait it out.

The thing is with Leclaire is no one knows, his tenure in Ottawa as a whole has been pretty embarrassing. Tampa doesn't want to move Connolly, if they were to move him for a goaltender...it would involve a no doubter...and there is always doubt on goalies. Goalies are not valued like they used to be.

I heard/read that he's already had some hip injuries that may have already compromised his ability as a power forward in the NHL...

Ya and he slipped in the draft because of it, Tampa knew that, and took him anyways. Similar to how we took Cowen.

Right. A surefire prospect like Cowen who has looked good in junior but has had his development hampered by an injury to the point where he could make the lineup on a team that has had Carkner and Hale in their lineup. Ottawa gambled and it remains to be seen if it pays off - could be the same for Tampa.

So basically we just rebuilt by trading our pending UFA's who are injury prone or playing poorly? Sounds great to me.

Eller is going to be better than Regin and Connolly has a very good chance of turning into the top line winger we so desperately lack. Tell me why any team would give those up for two soon to be UFAs who coincidentally are a decent goalie and a decent forward.

Replace Kovalev and Leclaire with Alfredsson and Alfredsson and you might get those teams to think about it.

It those deals could be done, they would have been.

I believe Kovy could still help Mtl if they reunite him with Pleko and Andrei.K. However, like stated by others, it won't be for Ellers. They would probably want to unload Boyd and the best prospect we could grab is Maxwell.

Word is Cowen is fine. Word is Connolly is fine. These guys didn't fall out of the top 10.

But either way, Cowen remains in Ottawa....Connolly remains in Tampa.
