Ponikarovsky, Practice, and Pre-Game Talk

Since there's no game until Thursday and the Martinez thread started to feature discussion of Ponikarovsky's return and new lines, I thought I'd start a new thread for talking about practices and any updates until Thursday.

Hammond says Ponikarovsky is back, skating with Simmonds and Handzus. Looks like the lines will be

Brown-Kopitar-Williams
Lewis-Stoll-Smyth
Ponikarovsky-Handzus-Simmonds
some combination of Westgarth, Zeiler, Richardson, Clifford.

Wish they would put Poni on the 1st line LW and keep Clifford on the 3rd line

And then reunite Smyth Stoll and Williams, with Lewis back down to the fourth line? I'm sure we'll see that at some point if/when the scoring on the top two lines slumps again.

I wanna see:

Poni-Kopi-Williams
Smyth-Stoll-Brown
Lewis-Zeus-Simmer
Any combo of Clifford, Richie, Westie, Zeiler

I think Lewis could become a regular on the third.

It's hard not to feel bad for him, given how hard he works and the professionalism with which he appears to approach the job, but he hasn't shown a lot of consistency when he's had regular shifts elsewhere.

Clifford, God bless him*, stepped up nicely, but I don't think he can handle top 9 minutes against quality opponents quite yet. That's why we didn't see much of him in the third this past Saturday (Richardson moved up with Handzus and Simmonds, iirc).

*Thanks, DL, for the new, old catchphrase!

I don't see a playmaker on that line 2. Could be pretty sloppy out there.

Mitchell maybe closer than we think? Hammond says he was skating and practicing without the wrist brace today. That'll help a ton, and it sounds like both he and Ponikarovsky haven't let their conditioning slide.

Seeing how Martinez was the only player eligible to be sent down w/o having to clear waivers, he's likely on his way back to Manchester.

Or he's sick, http://lakingsinsider.com/2010/12/08/martinez-update-3/

Why not send Harrold down? If a team picks him on waivers, no biggie <shrug>. I just think with AMart playing well, it would be better for him to stay around the team and fight for the 6th dman spot with Drewiske. His psyche would be better even if he sits down once in a while, as he continues to hopefully progress into an everyday NHL dman.

Because you don't want to give up assets for nothing. It is no secrect the Kings are looking for a LW. Strum was the most recent rumor for about a 4-5th round pick. Now if the Kings hold on to Harrold he could be used in the trade (and maybe even get more coming back like a 6 round pick) Boston gets a little more than the first deal and the Kings get keep the pick (and maybe pick one up).

If they put Harold on waivers they get nothing.
I am not saying that will happen but keeping assests is usually better than giving them away.

Wait a minute.....so Mitchy has made a full recovery now when a few days ago Murray said he would likely be sitting out for two more games? I don't know.....I'm hoping they're not rushing him back.

But a d of....
DD-Scuds
JJ-Mitchy
Marty-Greener

looks HOT.

Mitchell won't be ready until at least Monday.

Martinez has "flu-like symptoms" today, and was sent home early from practice.

I hope Martinez is good to go tomorrow and I'm glad that they're not rushing Mitchell. We haven't even entered the crazier part of the December schedule so there is no need.

Especially with home games vs CGY & MIN. While neither is an easy win, they are both games we should expect to win if the Kings truly are a competitive team.

Mitchell returning @ DET would be great timing.

I think this is best option we have at the moment Hes played frist line before and worth a shot. If he was healthy He proberly would have had a shot by now knowing TM juggling lines and all

From Rich, regarding Poni's return:

Quote:
Hes a strong defensive forward who had been part of the penalty-kill unit before his injury, but Terry Murray did not commit to immediately putting Ponikarovsky back on that unit.
Can't decide if that's ominous for the PK or not, since they've been doing (relatively) well without him, anyway.
