Reports out of Germany indicate the Union are going to get Faryd Mondragon as their Starting GK from Koeln. Mondragon is the oldest player in the Bundesliga at 39.

http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/87/ge...r-philadelphia

He is a HUGE upgrade in net, which is one large area of need if the Union are looking to compete. He is however 39 years old, so he is a temporary fix.

Much like bringing in an AHL vet, if that's what the rest of the young guns need to learn what winning is like it's worth it.

I'd like to see a DP forward to help take the stress off Le Toux and Mwanga. Not sold on Juan Pablo Angel, but anything beats Alejandro Moreno.

I HEARD the Union were interested in Robbie Keane (Irish National Forward) who used to start for Tottenham Hotspur, but he is 30 and is losing a lot of playing time to some of the Spurs younger guys, and MLS might be next on his list.

As an Irish-American, I would buy his jersey if we got him. Heck, just looking at the lineup with Mondragon and Keane in would be a HUGE upgrade over what we had last season, and both those vets could do wonders for developing some of our young guys.

Yea that would be nice. I am excited to see what Mwanga will do in his second season. I have never seen Keane play but if he started for Tottenham I would figure he would be one of the best players in the MLS.

In a fantasy world of mine I wish we could sign Del Piero when his contract is up at the end of this season. I know there is zero chance of this happening. Because if for some odd reason the Juve doesn't keep him he will probably wind up in the EPL.

I just googled it and apparently Sunderland, Aston Villa and West Ham are all interested.

That means he has a slim to nil chance of playing in MLS next year. Unless the Whitecaps go crazy and pay good money to get him.

Vancouver might grab him; there are plenty of rumblings out here.

I don't think Celtic can afford to sign him permanently, but you never know.

In related news, I officially puchased my Whitecaps season's tickets yesterday. Can't wait!

You live in Vancouver and you're a Flyers fan? I was up in Vancouver in May, what a beautiful city. The homeless people all have acts, everything looks so clean, and even the taxis are Prius's.

Not to mention EA Canada was the bee's knees.

Yeah... I'm a Flyer fan due to a Lindros family connection.

I grew up in Ontario and moved to Vancouver for my undergrad degree. I had no intention to live anywhere else in Canada after I graduated. Vancouver's a great city and I'm glad you had a chance to visit.

Very cool. My Vancouver trip was my first experience in Canada, and I enjoyed it a lot. I would go back again.

Union should try to get a player like Marquez, or some semi-international star... Ronaldinho may be available haha

Juan Pablo Angel, if nothing else is available...

Last I saw him, Ronaldinho made Mike York look like Kate Moss. No thanks.

Why?

They should obviously always be looking to improve, but I'm totally against bringing in somebody just because we've heard of them before. This team is still in building mode, laying a foundation. New York had three DPs and a massive payroll, look how far it got them.

I don't follow. You're comparing Mondragon to an "AHL vet?"

The guy has 50 international appearances, including a World Cup. He's been a legitimate starter in the Bundesliga for the past three years. He still has a couple years left in him and we'd be lucky to have him.

No, I'm comparing the Union to an AHL team. Even if he'd be too old to win a championship with this group, bringing him in to teach them how to win and put them in situations where they experience winning games is a positive, much like a guy too old for the NHL can help AHL prospects learn the same thing.

They're not that far from being a winning team and competing for the playoffs. They were 6-3-6 at home.

Didn't they both get fat? I could have sworn Ronaldinho did too.

Competing for the playoffs isn't a particularly huge accomplishment. They need a quality veteran guy who has been on a true MLS contender or quality Euro team before to really show them the ropes.

Yea guys CSC is right. If you haven't seen Ronaldinho play recently he has definitely put on some weight and isn't the player he used to be. Although he would still dominate the MLS.

While playing for Barcelona Ronaldinho's playing weight was 82-83kg he weighed 89kg when he was playing for Milan up until this year. He is almost done dropping the weight but still isn't at his playing Barcelona weight.

He is looking a lot better this season than last but he is still and he isn't the player he was on Barcelona.

His Barcelona totals 145 games played 70 goals 59 assists 129 points.

Milan totals 68 games played 20 goals 23 assists. His GPG and APG have both dropped.

But as I have said he would still dominate the MLS. But I don't think their is any chance realistically he comes to the MLS.

It was probably a year ago when I had seen him, but I thought he put on even more weight than that. Haven't been able to pay attention to any soccer since the world cup ended outside of a small number of Union matches, so I didn't realize he lost any either.
