Shelley suspended 2 games by NHL

TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie

NHL has scheduled a disciplinary hearing for PHI's Jody Shelley for his hit on BOS's Adam McQuaid.

MOD EDIT UPDATE FROM MONDAY:

Per CSN Philly:

Shelley gets 2 gm suspension

Quote:
The Flyers' Jody Shelley has been suspended for two games by the NHL for his inadvertent hit on Adam McQuaid in the second period Saturday against Boston.

Shelley had a conference call with NHL officials this morning.

Shelley was chasing down a puck deep in the Boston zone to negate an icing call when he said he lost his edge and sent McQuaid flying headfirst into the boards. Video of the play is available on our blog. Shelley quickly apologized to McQuaid, who remained on the ice momentarily before being helped off. McQuaid returned later in the period.

Shelley received a 5-minute major and a game misconduct.

"I didn't mean to do that," Shelley told reporters on Saturday. "I lost my edge. Next thing, we're in the boards together. I'm glad he is OK. It was one of those things - you don't want to see a guy laying on the ice. The referee had to make that call. I was disappointed that it happened."

He deserves it, intentional or not.

I heard he apologized to the bruins bench as he left, good on him.

It's in the team's favor for him to be suspended 246 games. Unless, of course, he continues to be a cap hit during the suspension.

We have to make sure we win without so Lavi doesn't want to put him back in.

It's going to be great to roll 4 lines! Even if Zherdev ends up on the 4th line and Powe moved up it could be good!

I'm hoping for a fiver. But guessing it'll be 3 or 4. Does he have any kind of history with this stuff?

Here's what I found:

March 25, 2004 -- Three games. Punching Alex Henry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh9yAi5polY

February 23, 2003 -- Two games. Hitting Brad Stuart from behind.

December 5, 2002 -- One game. Reached over the boards and made contact with Ronald Petrovicky. Petrovicky was in an on-ice fight with Ray Whitney.

So I guess he'll get 4, in keeping with tradition!

That was all old NHL. A 4-game in old NHL is 20 in new NHL.

This is likely the rule to be referenced in the hearings:

Quote:
Any contact between opposing players while pursuing the puck on an icing must be for the sole purpose of playing the puck, and not for eliminating the opponent from playing the puck. Unnecessary or dangerous contact could result in penalties being assessed to the offending player.

Make it 5 games. It was so nice seeing a real fourth line out there against the bruins, and dare i say it, it probably won us the game with that last shift in the third

Campbell told Shooter there will be no suspension as that is a better way of punishing the flyers, keeping shelley in the lineup
